Framations: Friday, 9 September 2011

Two new exhibits open September 9 in St. Charles focusing on a burgeoning area of art - textiles. Each exhibit will offer the viewer a chance to see many forms of the media and its uses.

The first exhibit, Fiber Content, is a juried exhibit, with an open call for entries and will present work by artists throughout the St. Louis region. This exhibit, to be juried by local curator and artist Barbara Simon, is part of Innovations in Textiles 9. Innovations is a biennial collaborative event in St. Louis that investigates the state of contemporary textile art. Fiber Content will open on September 9 from 6-8pm and be on display through October 13. On the evening of the free reception, awards for this exhibit will be announced as well.

Also on display in Gallery Two from September 9 - October 13 will be another exhibit of Fiber art. According to artist Sarah Merideth, the goal of the exhibit entitled Transposed is "to demonstrate through the work the techniques used to add and remove color on fabric. To show the give and take, the manipulation and resulting design is a wonderful journey. The term Transpose means literally: toLink change the relative position, order, or sequence of; cause to change places; interchange. I consider this in terms of color and design. Not only can you add to the surface, but you can always reverse or remove color and design through different bleaching and discharging techniques. Sometimes the adding and subtracting happens in so many layered steps, I lose track of the journey."

Isolation Room/Gallery Kit: Friday, 16 September 2011 2011

Ross McDonnell: Mine
September 16 - October 12, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, September 16, 2011 6pm-9pm
Lemp Brewery, Building 6***

Irish artist Ross McDonnell explores St Louis history through sublime sensations. The water becomes a 3D canvas on which light refracts, as illuminations glow, taking on a life of its own. What do you think about in front of art? If you have been drilled in art history or ruined by a taste for critical theory you are quickly capsized in sheer terror comprehending the experience by describing it to yourself in a narrative. We float in a world that is ruled by story, making it difficult to plunge into the senses directly. In the attempt to hold onto the nearest linguistic life raft, constantly trying to order experience in language so that we may repeat it to ourselves and to others the opportunity provided by simply 'plunging in' is forever lost. McDonnell will deconstruct the Gallery Kit form, projecting a new film work on and within its structure. Filmed while scuba diving in rural Missouri, this collaborative work will be installed in a cavernous basement space located in the Lemp Brewery complex.

Note: The curators and/or a gallery attendant will be escorting visitors down to view the work during the opening and throughout the exhibition. Hours: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday: Noon-4pm or by appointment.

Craft Alliance in the Loop: Friday, 26 August 2011

NNENNA OKORE: SHOKOLOKO
SOLO EXHIBITION at Craft Alliance in the Delmar Loop
August 26 - October 23, 2012
Opening Reception: August 26, 6 - 8pm

Craft Alliance is thrilled to open a solo exhibition of Nigerian fiber artist, Nnenna Okore. Nnenna Okore was raised in Nsukka, Nigeria, and has emerged as one of the foremost artists of her generation. She relies on the use of flotsam or discarded objects, transforming them into
intricate sculpture and installations through repetitive and labor-intensive techniques. Okore's materials are that of mundane objects such as rope, paper, burlap, food starch, coffees and dyes.
Interested in heightening the perception of textures, forms and the organic contours that exist within our environment, Okore creates a conversation between materials. These processes yield dramatic sculptural and spatial compositions that mimic the very essence of the egret.

Shokoloko is part of the Innovations in Textiles collaborative, a biennial city wide event. CA will host an Innovations in Textiles Artist's talk at 3pm, September 17, in the CA gallery on the Delmar Loop.

Opening concurrently at the Charak Gallery is Jim Hay: Angels, People and SMOKE. As an international artist working in rural Japan, Hay incorporates textiles from around the world and focuses on the cultural concepts of individuality, conformity, sexuality and myth in his work.

Gallery Visio: Thursday, 25 August 2011

A University of Missouri–St. Louis studio art class wrapped a two-week July trip in Amsterdam with a week of intense and high-energy designing and printing. The result was the creation of 25 posters inspired by their trip through Amsterdam. That art will be on display for the exhibit “Visie Van Amsterdam” Aug. 25 to Sept. 22 in Gallery Visio at the UMSL.

A reception will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 25 in the gallery. Participants will discuss the Amsterdam trip, show photos and videos, and answer questions at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 6 in the Student Government Association Chamber at UMSL’s Millennium Student Center. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Led by Jen McKnight, associate professor of art at UMSL, a group consisting of two UMSL alumni, five UMSL students and one student each from Loyola University New Orleans, Washington University in St. Louis and Webster University in Webster Groves, Mo., toured eight internationally recognized graphic design firms in Amsterdam. The class featured a mixture of graphic design and advertising students, which McKnight said led to a cross-pollination of perspectives between the two areas of study.

Fraser Leonard Gallery: Thursday, 25 August 2011

Fraser Leonard will be opening his own Fine Art Gallery at 12:00 noon on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 3611 Schutzen Street, in New Melle, Missouri, a small suburban township west of St. Louis located in St. Charles County.

Leonard’s latest sculptures and paintings will debut at his new Gallery The artist will provide remarks at 6:00 pm, during the Gallery’s Opening Reception. Leonard’s paintings are acrylic, often enhanced by gold and silver leaf and holograms. His works are uplifting and fun; they are truly Art for Your Spirit and Your Life. He also creates metal sculptures that are 3-dimentional, and many are wall hangings suitable for both residential and corporate settings. While many of his artistic creations will be on display within his new Gallery space, most of his work can also be viewed at www.fraserleonard.com.

“Whether I am painting landscapes, impressionistic or pure abstract design, my large brush strokes reveal expressions of energy, light, balance and contrast. These attributes of nature are emphasized by bold and soft hues smashing into one another on the canvas. As a sculptor and a painter, my work is a spontaneous response to my surroundings; it is unencumbered and intuitive”, notes Leonard. He continues, “This new gallery space, located in the beautiful Missouri countryside, should prove to be very inspirational for my creative process.”

The Gallery will be open each Thursday, Friday and Saturday and by appointment. The regular hours of operation for The Gallery will be Thursdays Noon-8 pm, Fridays Noon-8 pm, Saturdays 10 am-3 pm.

The Fraser Leonard Art Gallery is located just a few yards south of the intersection of Highways D and F, across the street from the U.S. Post Office and the New Melle City Hall and Police Station. Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 16 September 2011

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of acclaimed artist Lia Cook. Exhibition opens
Friday, September 9th with a reception on Friday, September 16th 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through October 15th. Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

Lia Cook creates weavings that explore the complex relationship between visual image, sensory stimulation, and emotional identification. Her artistic investigations have followed diverse approaches that are expressed in her series, including Big Baby, Un/Mask, Traces, Binary Traces and Face Maze, all created from 2000 to the present. Cook weds the early 19th century Jacquard weaving technique with contemporary digital technology. Beginning with slides, photographs or video stills, she develops her imagery, couples it with digital technology, and creates specifically designed weaves that allow her to build the image thread by thread.
The digital pixel becomes a thread that when interlaced with another becomes both cloth and image at the same time. This woven image brings with it many of the sensual experiences that we associate with cloth.

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 16 September 2011

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of acclaimed artist Lanny Bergner. Exhibition opens Friday, September 9th with a reception on Friday, September 16th 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through October 15th. Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

Lanny Bergner is a nature inspired mixed media sculptor, fiber and installation artist who creates organic sculptural constructions and site specific installation environments out of inorganic manmade materials. By using hands-on processes of coiling, fraying, twisting, wrapping, glueing and knotting, Bergner transforms industrial screening, wire, silicone and monofilament into organic constructions.

“My desire is to create works that appear to have grown into being. I love the natural world and am constantly inspired by its beauty and infinite varieties of form. This, in combination with my fears, quirks and joys, results in works that celebrate the wonder of it all.”~artist statement

Nu-Art Series: Friday, 9 September 2011

The Nu-Art Series proudly presents Ronald Herd: "The Most Known Unknown" with an opening reception on Friday, September 9, 2011, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Nu-Art Series' Metropolitan Gallery. The exhibition will be on display through October 7, 2011.

Ronald Herd II, a.k.a. Bro. Ron, a.k.a. r2c2h2 tha artivist writes,

"My job an artivist (artist + activist) is to actively promote understanding, love and appreciation for the creative arts as well as for creative people. I use my art in particular to break down all types of walls and barriers that people put up either to justify their hatred, prejudice and indifference or because of their ignorance and naiveté towards certain issues and topics concerning people, history and culture(s). One of my main objectives in my profession is to teach the world how to love, not just tolerate black people and other beautiful beings and things! If I reach just one hue-man being then my entire existence in all its meaning will be totally justified!

"My art is created through the use and motivation of three of my main passions: art, music and history, in particular African and African American History. I think four of my biggest influences, Jacob Lawrence, El Greco, William H. Johnson and Paul Gaugin, have taught and convinced me that interesting stories can be told in a visually expressive and highly original individual style without the use of the written word. These artists among the countless others that I admire like Picasso, Charles White, Van Gogh, Romare Bearden, Lois Jones, Archibald Motley, George Hunt, Jean Michel Basquiat to musicians Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Run DMC, Louis Armstrong, Robert Johnson, Howling Wolf, Billie Holiday, Robert Johnson, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and 2pac remind me through their prolific outputs that research is one of the most important ingredients in forming your own artistic voice. Before I create a series of related artworks I dive deeply into the subject(s) of my choice. I feel artists are like synthesizers, taking in all foreign information and materials, mixing it with the artist's experiences and knowledge and then compressing it into a product made in the artist's likeness or image based on the artist's own ideas and philosophies. All great art to me seems to be those works that have substance and tell unwritten as well as written stories that are to be retold and reinterpreted for years to come. Hopefully my dedication to my art will continue to lead me in this direction."

Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday by appointment only.

Nanette Boileau: Sea of Hot Pink Buffalo

Opening Reception: Saturday, August 20th, 7–10 pm
August 20th – 28th, 2011

Los Caminos is pleased to present Sea of Hot Pink Buffalo, a video-installation by artist Nanette Boileau. Combining her scholarly background in American Studies with her new media art practice, Boileau creates an immersive environment with text and moving images, capturing the scale and grandeur of the American Bison.

Inspired by Boileau’s encounter with a female buffalo in Custer State Park, South Dakota, Sea of Hot Pink Buffalo explores the disparity between the strength of buffalos and that of the humans who now control their existence. In 2010, Boileau witnessed as a female buffalo was taken away from her herd and tagged for hunting, as she was no longer able to reproduce. Building upon the Sioux legend of the White Buffalo Woman, Boileau perceives the female buffalo as a symbol of feminine force, authority and presence, a point that she heightens through casting components of the installation in hot pink. Throughout Sea of Hot Pink Buffalo, Boileau weaves together personal narratives and Native American legends with her multi-media practice to capture the scale and grandeur of the American Bison.

Originally connected by a teacher/mentor/student bond, we six artists, friends and colleagues all, accepted the challenge of creating a new body of work out of the shared materials from each other’s studios. Akin to sowing seeds of inspiration, the collaboration has deepened our bond as we reap the benefits of the visual vocabulary of items we traded with one another and integrated into our own work. This collective conversation has taken us out of our comfort zones to expand how we work conceptually, materially and how we think about our work.

Located at 627 East Broadway in Alton, Illinois, the Jacoby Arts Center is open Tuesdays-Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays from Noon to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays.

LESLIE LASKEY: S.E.N.T.
September 9 – October 15, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, September 9, from 6 to 9 pm

WOP Space: Kelley Johnson: Works on Paper Series

Public Hours: Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Bruno David Gallery opens the fall season with an exhibition of new work by Leslie Laskey called S.E.N.T. Security Envelopes Now Tampered. After seeing these collages, the viewer will never look at their mail in the same way again. The works that make up S.E.N.T. challenge the viewer to question their previously held ideas about the objects they throw away on a daily basis. Laskey opens the audience’s eyes to a range of materials, objects and discoveries. Composed of security envelopes, this new series brings to light the different patterns used for the insides of envelopes that, with Laskey’s artistic vision, morph into fascinating and energetic pieces. Infinitely varied, the S.E.N.T. series becomes an exposition of the colors, shapes, and patterns of envelopes. A fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Jim Harris and Megan Vallowe accompanies the exhibit.

With the beginning of our Sixth Season, the gallery is pleased to open a new space called WOP Space. In the WOP Space we are pleased to present Kelley Johnson’s most recent work titled Works on Paper Series. Johnson’s ability to absorb the viewer, produce interesting color combinations, and provide a sense of rapidity and tension are carried over from previous work to these new pieces. What makes Johnson’s new works on paper unique and exciting are the ways in which those similar ideas from before are presented in a much more minimalist fashion. Through vibrant colors and swift, almost chaotic brushstrokes juxtaposed with harsh, geometric lines, Johnson is able to produce a world that captivates and engages the viewer. A fully

In the Front Room the gallery presents a retrospective of the first seven years of the Museum of Pocket Art (MoPA). MoPA began in response to author Walter Mosley’s idea that everyone should carry a small piece of artwork in their pocket to brighten their day and share with others. MoPA organizes exhibitions to show in a standard wallet with artwork made specifically to exhibit at a small scale, usually about the size of a business card. The wallet/exhibition circulates from artist to artist for a period of a few months creating a one to one person traveling exhibition.
The exhibition MoPA: Retrospective will include over 100 artists who had participated since the first MoPA exhibition including Jeremy Morgan, Amy Elligson, Mario Trejo, Eric Shultis, Robert Jackson Harrington, Josh Keller, Hannah Piper Burns, Donna J Wan, and Jan Bythe.

In the Media Room, the gallery presents a new video work by William Morris. The video titled Atraxia illustrates the relationship of a running man to a ringing telephone and its physiological result. The running man symbolizes one’s own anxiety; the expectations of performance upon a subject influenced by external stresses. Like the dog in Pavlov’s behavioral experiments, the running man hears and reacts to external stimuli. The end animation depicts the effect of the stimulus on the body, in which a direct path between the brain and the digestive system is shown.
