The Art Project: Children with Autism Create

Friday 4/27 6-10 pm and Saturday 4/28 12-6 pm
Snowflake Gallery, 3156 Cherokee Street St. Louis, MO 63118

Please join us this Friday and Saturday during Autism awareness month to view artwork by children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a pervasive developmental disability that affects language, social, sensory, academics and behavior in children and adults. Often, children on the autism spectrum have extremely strong visual skills and learn, understand or even think in pictures instead of language. We find that visual art is a natural medium for many individuals.

Children with autism often have intense interests or fascinations that define and motivate them. Instead of squelching or redirecting those interests during the process of making this artwork, the organizers of this show wanted to encourage, celebrate and display these interests directly. The purpose of the show is to promote awareness of this disability, and to create work which the artists will immediately recognize and love as their very own.

Maryville University invites you to the fourth of five BFA - Studio Arts exhibition. This weeks artist, Noriko Sugawara, specializes in sculptures. There is a reception with the artist this Thursday April 26 from 6 - 8 pm.

The past few years, I have been working on sculptures that deal with the human condition, life, and world. Due to developments in technology people can exchange ideas in an ever increasing pace. This makes me interested in how peoples’ thoughts are relating to the world and each other on a global scale.

Both, eggs and hearts are universal symbols to which people of different ages, backgrounds and cultures can relate, thus allowing me to communicate with a larger audience.

Maryville University invites you to the third of five BFA - Studio Arts exhibition. This weeks artist, Michelle Haas, specializes in ceramics and metals. There is a reception with the artist this Thursday April 19 from 6 - 8 pm.

Over the years I have shared my life with many different species of animals. It is because of this that I have come to understand the special love that they have for their human companions, and have developed a need to recreate them through varying media. My sculptures are created often from White Earthenware and are depictions of equines and canines. I portray these creatures in varying positions to show those emotions and feelings not seen by the everyday animal enthusiast. My Jewelry and Metals pieces are created similarly in that figural creations of animals are viewed through moments in time not seen by the everyday person.

Morton J. May Foundation Gallery: Thursday 12 April 2007

Please join Maryville University for an exhibit of paintings and ceramic pieces by St. Louis artist Jamie Shoop.

“Glimpses,” a show of mainly paintings and a few ceramic sculptural pieces, deals with how I perceive creation and nature; how each sunset or sunrise resonates a feeling or an emotion. The drama from each piece is created by texture and color. The title comes from a song I wrote a few years back called “Glimpses of Heaven”. I believe that creation is a glimpse of heaven and there is no better way to share that with others than through creative expression.

White Flag Projects: Friday 6 April 2007

ChannelBone, the newest video installation by Megan and Murray McMillan, opens on Friday, April 6 at White Flag Projects and will be on view for two days only. The installation, a large wood and plastic construction in the shape of a life-size humpback whale, hangs from the gallery's steel ceiling beams. The video, placed inside the whale's "ribcage," features tango dancers, chess players, and veterans with spinal cord injuries in an exploration of life experiences that both create divisions and provide a passage that was not there before.

The term “channel bone” comes from two sources: Ovid uses it in the Metamorphoses to describe the neck or windpipe, and it is used in the Bible, in Job 31:22, as a tube or a shaft. In ChannelBone, it refers to the multiple meanings of a “channel”— as a technological, communicative, and geological term. The imagery of bones, particularly the customary museum-mounted exhibition of whale skeletons suspended from ceilings, is central to the concept of the piece. Traditionally, whales have been used as a narrative device for transformation. From Pinocchio to Jonah to Moby Dick, the whale is a vehicle that both physically and metaphysically transports a character to a new destination — in a way, working as a channel between two states of being.

ERIK SPEHN: NEW PAINTINGS

APRIL 20- MAY 26, 2007

A reception for Erik Spehn will be held Friday, April 20, 2005 from 6:00-8:00 PM

Schmidt Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the exhibition of New Paintings by Erik Spehn. Erik's work which has been shown only in group exhibitions for the past seven years has centered on his use of lines of color. At times these have echoed the forms of Renaissance paintings; at other times they have referenced the flow of landscape and natural forms sometimes on shaped canvases. As beautiful and successful as many of these individual paintings have been they did not develop into substantial bodies of work.

These New Paintings have pushed well past the experiments of the past few years. The lines are now much thinner and are usually placed on color fields activating the eye to penetrate the surface imagery rather than to just look at it. At times they are seemingly simple vertical stripes; other times they are broken into segments reassembling themselves as a motif when one views the canvas as a whole. In some paintings the fracture of the line creates eye movement reminiscent of the Op-Art paintings of the 60s. Other canvases echo the emotion of the best reductive painting - forthright elegance.

Formal gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 1:00-5:00 PM
Please call for an appointment if you wish to view the exhibition at another time.
