ERIK SPEHN: NEW PAINTINGS
APRIL 20- MAY 26, 2007
A reception for Erik Spehn will be held Friday, April 20, 2005 from 6:00-8:00 PM
Schmidt Contemporary Art is pleased to announce the exhibition of New Paintings by Erik Spehn. Erik's work which has been shown only in group exhibitions for the past seven years has centered on his use of lines of color. At times these have echoed the forms of Renaissance paintings; at other times they have referenced the flow of landscape and natural forms sometimes on shaped canvases. As beautiful and successful as many of these individual paintings have been they did not develop into substantial bodies of work.
These New Paintings have pushed well past the experiments of the past few years. The lines are now much thinner and are usually placed on color fields activating the eye to penetrate the surface imagery rather than to just look at it. At times they are seemingly simple vertical stripes; other times they are broken into segments reassembling themselves as a motif when one views the canvas as a whole. In some paintings the fracture of the line creates eye movement reminiscent of the Op-Art paintings of the 60s. Other canvases echo the emotion of the best reductive painting - forthright elegance.
Formal gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 1:00-5:00 PM
Please call for an appointment if you wish to view the exhibition at another time.
The work will remain on view through the Grand Center Art Walk May 26, 2007
