William Morris: Coded Time September 23 - October 22

Opening Reception September 23 from 6 to 8pm
Artist lecture to correlate with the exhibition at noon on September 23 Sverdrup room 101 on Webster University Campus

The title of William Morris’s exhibition comes from the term time code, the visual measurement of synchronous events in time recorded onto video.  Its initial use was to be a guide during the process of combining audio with video, or to mark events on video at specific points.  Its role in linear videotape editing was of crucial importance, but with the advent of non-linear editing the time code became anachronistic. The exhibition will include five video works, each related in some way to the idea of coded time, sequential or otherwise.  Additionally graphic diagrams and technical notes dating back to 1988 and linked to Morris’s recent video works will illustrate the passage of time and the artist’s own involvement with the evolution of video technology.

All events are free and open to the public. The Hunt Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm during the duration of the exhibitions.

Duane Reed Gallery: Thursday, 15 September 2016

Jun Kaneko — Jeffrey Vaughn

September 9th - October 15th, 2016
Opening Reception Thursday, September 15th

Duane Reed Gallery is excited to present the work of Jun Kaneko and Jeffrey Vaughn. Both trained painters, Vaughn’s works explore the sublimity of nature through realism, while Kaneko’s work connects with the sublimity of form and abstraction through meditative patterns and shapes.
Vaughn’s paintings communicate with outstanding serenity and clarity the calmness of being within nature; he achieves this with such accuracy that the viewer cannot help but to feel as if they are standing within the painting itself.

Kaneko’s Dango forms are world renowned; both peaceful and powerful, strong yet gentle. Ranging from medium to colossal, his work maintains a strict consistency that allows the viewer to enter in to the same zen peacefulness regardless of how large or small. The form itself is only half of the experience, as Kaneko’s glazes take on a life of their own. His compositions are thoughtful, precise, and compliment the powerful, rounded surface they are united with.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION

Robin Assner-Alvey (St. Louis) and
Dean Kessmann (Washington, DC)

October 7 - November 26, 2016

Opening Reception: Friday, October 7, 6pm - 8pm

For Duet’s next exhibition, Robin Assner-Alvey (St. Louis) and Dean Kessmann (Washington D.C.) both play with malfunction and the technical hiccup. The glitch signifies something wrong, or something bothersome that you can’t quite put your finger on, here each artist uses the digital photograph to highlight that mechanical encounter.  Assner-Alvey combines the ghostly apparition as a series of abstractions that radiate in layers from the edge of the figure to the edge of the frame. A photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy, deepening to the point that recognition completely breaks down and where lovely colors and shapes play. Kessmann fuses the graphic designer’s individual utilitarian layout for printer’s registration marks and CMYK color management bar with an extended blowup that ultimately reveals that color is never quite balanced and is always somehow misaligned.

Reese Gallery: Friday, 9 September 2016

Reese Gallery: Bede Clarke and Casey Miller: Looking Beyond
Friday, September 09, 2016, 6-9 pm.
Exhibition closes October 8, 2016

In the upcoming exhibition, BEDE CLARKE and CASEY MILLER draw with curious lines, as they forego conventional approaches toward representation. CLARKE and MILLER "look beyond" to reveal the moments layered underneath daily experience - finding new visual languages for ideas surfacing from the subconscious. Drawing more than meets the eye, both BEDE CLARKE and CASEY MILLER bring a delicacy of line, edge, form and gesture. Bede Clarke sums it up well when he writes of his studio practice:

"Maybe there is more here than you ever imagined - can you just grow a bit taller to see it and listen a bit deeper to hear it?  It's always just ahead, just around the next corner. It can be a part of the wonderful complexity of being a human..."

These two visionary artists help us "look beyond" the veneer of everyday life.

Outside/In Paint for Peace: Friday, 2 Spetember 2016

On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed black eighteen-year-old, was shot and killed by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. This set off a chain of events which led to protests and property destruction as well as multiple discussions, forums, lawsuits and investigations, putting a spotlight on our city and our country’s continued struggle with racial inequality.
This exhibition consists of a unique and energetic collection of painted panels selected from more than 100 Ferguson and St. Louis businesses impacted by the vandalism that accompanied some of the protests. The works of art represent both the collaborative and singular work of artists and community members responding to the pain, frustration, shock and anger felt by many.
When viewing the works, one will observe the multiple media used, from acrylic to markers and spray paint. It is significant that many of the works were spontaneous group collaborations that are aesthetically beautiful while presenting a specific but universal message of hope, peace, and unity.
The paintings fall into two loose categories, symbolic and text-driven. Swirls of bright color, flowers, hearts, children’s hand and foot prints, trees and birds—primarily the dove, the eagle and the phoenix—symbolize hope and strength. The text-driven panels feature familiar encouraging quotes from the Bible, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Mother Theresa, and Lao Tzu. There are a few with specific messages such as “One Love,” “Come Together” and “We Are Them.”
The exhibition, Outside In: Paint for Peace, chronicles a community response through art at a unique and powerful moment in the history of Ferguson, St. Louis, the region, and the nation.

CHARLIE WOULD...

Charlie Le Mindu

September 15, 2016 - November 19, 2016
Opening reception Friday, Sept. 15th, 5-8 pm

St. Louis’ projects + gallery is pleased to present “Charlie Would...,” Charlie le Mindu is known for pioneering the use of human hair as an artistic medium and combines fashion, performance art and installation in his work. The show will run Sept. 15 to Nov. 19, 2016, and features some of his best-known sculptural works.

"Charlie is one of the most electrifying artists working today,” says Susan Barrett, founder and president of Barrett Barrera Projects. “His pieces challenge us to look at new mediums and redefine what we think of as sculpture.”

Le Mindu’s artistic practice is influenced by the subcultures of European nightlife and drag performance, while his iconography finds influence in subjects as varied as ancient mythology, fantastical bestiaries, and medieval headdresses. More than just wearable art capable of transforming and extending the human body, within the space of the gallery his sculptures recall both natural and fantastical imagery.

In ‘Charlie Would….’ Charlie le Mindu demonstrates the limits of his medium and the limits of traditional definitions of art. Using sculpture and movement, le Mindu coalesces contemporary culture and our primal selves into creations simultaneously reminiscent of African art and European clubwear. The artist pushes the material boundaries of synthetic and human hair, developing techniques that treat hair much in the same way that fur has been treated and fetishized for its aesthetic and sensual qualities in the larger historical continuum of fashion. Charlie le Mindu is redefining the fetish by reexamining hair not only as a means of personal decoration, but as a material with which we can fashion the self and manifest the imagination.

More than just wearable art capable of transforming and extending the human body, within the space of the gallery Charlie le Mindu’s tressed and tufted sculptures recall both natural and fantastical imagery: fluorescent jellyfish float in the darkness, while large winged creatures hover, both ominous and inviting, before the viewer.

Appealing to the artist’s subversive personality, influences and oeuvre, ‘Charlie Would....’ asks us to consider, what else would Charlie do?

“Charlie Would...” is made possible with generous support from HairDreams, The Dominic Michael Salon, and the Lindenwood University Fashion Design Program. Barrett Barrera Projects is the artistic representative for Charlie le Mindu.
