Art Saint Louis: Saturday, 26 July 2014

Free reception for FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
Saturday, July 26, 2014, 4-7 p.m.
JULY 26-SEPTEMBER 11, 2014
A visual and culinary feast awaits! Art Saint Louis brings art and food together for a block party celebrating the exhibition Food, Glorious Food in the Art Saint Louis Gallery & Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters Café at 1223 Pine Street in downtown St. Louis.

The exhibition will be ushered in with an opening reception to whet your appetite. Join us on Saturday, July 26 from 4-7 p.m. for all the best in local food & art.

The main course, of course, is the art exhibition, but there's much more on the menu! Food trucks from Zia's, The Sweet Divine and The Bivouac Shack will roll in just for our event and offer delectables outside the Gallery while the baristas of Mississippi Mud Coffee Roasters Café will create hot and cold drinks made to order indoors.
Artists Chelsea Soronen & Rusty Conklin of Chalk Riot will contribute to the event by creating chalk artworks throughout the area before & during the afternoon & evening. Guests are invited to contribute & chalk their own designs, too. Artmart will provide some chalk, but you can also help by bringing your own! Photos by Robin Hirsch & Emily Amberger.
The adjacent Kauffman Park will include live art-making, including plein air painting by Michael Anderson and Lon Brauer (artists who both have artworks featured in the exhibition), chalk artists from Chalk Riot, live music and more, plus plenty of room for picnickers. Guests are invited to join in on the live art and chalk art. We encourage you to bring your art supplies and set up an easel to paint or draw or photograph-whatever your media, you are welcome to make art during this event! Chalk will be provided by Sponsor Artmart for artists wanting to create their own chalk art. We invite guests to bring easy-to-carry portable chairs and picnic blankets, so that you can have a place to sit in the Park and enjoy food at your leisure. So, please plan accordingly.
Jurors for Food, Glorious Food are Allyson Mace, Publisher and Founder, Sauce Magazine. Allyson is also an avid photographer and art supporter; and Sara Choler Hale, artist and Founder of Fair Shares CCSA. Sara previously headed the art & design department for Schlafly Beer and is the creator and organizer for Schlafly's annual "Art Outside" art fair/exhibition and is also the creator of Slow Food's "Art of Food" event.

Food, Glorious Food returns to a popular theme introduced two years ago in Art Saint Louis' 2012 exhibition series. A juried exhibition open to St. Louis regional artists, the art in this show takes inspiration from all aspects of food, from farm to fine dining. The exhibition features 76 creative treats by 51 local artists from Missouri and Illinois. Works include paintings, ceramics, assemblages, fiber sculptures, drawings, printmaking, photography, mixed media, glass, and much more. All artworks in this exhibit are available for purchase and none is priced more than $400. You can get a sneak peek at the featured artworks in our Facebook album for the show here.

Artist Receptions for Eric Hoefer's "Architectonic" & Matthew Johnson's "Cities and Networks"

"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else." Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

Reese Gallery presents Eric Hoefer's solo show "Architectonic" and Matthew Johnson's exhibit "Cities and Networks."  At Reese Gallery, two artists explore the scale and scope of imagined architectures and invented cities.

In Gallery 1, Eric Hoefer investigates the science of structure and the anatomy of architecture in his solo show "Architectonic." Almost toy-like, his ceramic sculptures and (quasi) vessel forms are reminiscent of towers, balconies, spires, balustrades, terraces, bridges...colliding into compound architectural forms.

In Gallery 2, we present Matthew Johnson's exhibit, "Cities and Networks."Deeply inspired by Italo Calvino's book "Invisible Cities," Matthew's work is a reflection of those invented scenes, strange, chaotic, serene, and unexpected, but very real.Working through drawings and sculptures, his work speaks to the intersection of artificial and built environments.

Artists' Reception, Friday July 18th, 2014, from 6pm to 8pm
Artists' Talk, Saturday July 19th, 2014 from 1pm to 4pm,  with artists speaking at 1:30 pm and 2 pm
