Craft Alliance in the Loop: Friday, 26 August 2011

NNENNA OKORE: SHOKOLOKO
SOLO EXHIBITION at Craft Alliance in the Delmar Loop
August 26 - October 23, 2012
Opening Reception: August 26, 6 - 8pm

Craft Alliance is thrilled to open a solo exhibition of Nigerian fiber artist, Nnenna Okore. Nnenna Okore was raised in Nsukka, Nigeria, and has emerged as one of the foremost artists of her generation. She relies on the use of flotsam or discarded objects, transforming them into
intricate sculpture and installations through repetitive and labor-intensive techniques. Okore's materials are that of mundane objects such as rope, paper, burlap, food starch, coffees and dyes.
Interested in heightening the perception of textures, forms and the organic contours that exist within our environment, Okore creates a conversation between materials. These processes yield dramatic sculptural and spatial compositions that mimic the very essence of the egret.

Shokoloko is part of the Innovations in Textiles collaborative, a biennial city wide event. CA will host an Innovations in Textiles Artist's talk at 3pm, September 17, in the CA gallery on the Delmar Loop.

Opening concurrently at the Charak Gallery is Jim Hay: Angels, People and SMOKE. As an international artist working in rural Japan, Hay incorporates textiles from around the world and focuses on the cultural concepts of individuality, conformity, sexuality and myth in his work.
