Framations: Friday, 8 April 2016

As we approach each spring, there is always the thought to how volatile the season may be any given year. Spring brings thoughts of new life, beauty and reemergence after the cold and bleakness that signifies winter. But when we see the new life coming forth with spring, we can also train the eye to notice the things that do not come alive again. While we look for what is new, we often notice also the decay and ruin left by winter or in other ways, the destruction of time. With this train of thought, Framations Art Gallery has invited artists to enter work in their current exhibit, Ruin and Revival

This theme was open to all mediums and open to artists interpretation, so will be another exciting exhibit to view at Framations, located on Historic Main Street in St. Charles. With proximity to the Missouri River, the affects of weather and flooding are always on the minds of the owners.  "Each spring we wonder what storms may bring to this area. We have seen flooding several times in our ten years on Main Street, as well as the tornado that tore through the area a few years ago" remarked Sarah Merideth, one of the two owners at Framations.  "I feel like the best we can do is to be prepared and enjoy the beautiful weather when we have it and always hope it will continue".

Visitors to the gallery are invited to come during the Opening Reception on Friday, April 8 from 6-8pm and plan to have their dinner or drinks on Main Street, as there are many options within walking distance.  At the Opening, there will be a variety of free food and beverages available. Framations also invites the public to vote for People's Choice in the Ruin and Revival exhibit when they visit. The voting continues through the full length of the exhibit, which ends on May 19.

Running the same dates April 8 - May 19 in Gallery Two is an exhibit of Mixed Media work by artist Coleen Breen. Recently, Coleen's work focuses primarily on florals, using textures, layers and often metallic media to give a subtle yet striking feel of depth.

Riverwork Project spearheaded by Sun Smith-Foret, a fiber artist who is known for her in large-scale quilts, involves a collaborative textile project involving 100 artists. The resulting improvisational quilt projects have been sewn together to create a single artwork measuring over 300’.

“Remnants of Europe” by Brad Loudenback

Friday, April 8 at 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Brad Loudenback, a professor in the Department of Art, Design, and Art History in Webster's Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts, created a series of collages based on his impressions of numerous cities of Europe.

The works were created while teaching at Webster’s Vienna campus in 2010 and while traveling in 2015 with the support of a Webster Faculty Research Grant.

In a 2015 Webster Centennial Talk, Loudenback said "the method of assembling collages…was analogous to the way cities are built and well suited to convey the story of rival cultural narratives as they merge over time.”

Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 25 March 2016

Aaron Karp - James Marshall - Daniel Burnett
Opening reception Friday, March 25th — 5:00 - 8:00 PM
March 25 — April 29, 2016

Duane Reed gallery is excited to showcase the work of Aaron Karp and James Marshall. Although different in choice of medium, these two artists both create visually powerful work that masterfully utilizes texture and surface quality.  Furthermore, the relationship between these two artists work in terms of content is equally compelling:  Karp ap-proaches his paintings from the perspective of simultaneously concealing and revealing, playing out the metaphor that relates directly to his process of building and fracturing layers of paint.  Marshall's ceramic pieces explore the quality of the liminal nature they represent.  These objects exist just past the threshold of the subliminal realm at the point of emergence and its resulting openness and ambiguity.  This relationship, existent in both aesthetic and philosophy, establishes a narrative between bodies of work, making for an engaging and stimulating experience for the viewer.

ROBERT SAGERMAN:
MONOCHROMATIC PAINTINGS

Robert Sagerman, 5,574, 2015, oil on canvas, 26x25 inches

OPENING RECEPTION FRIDAY, MARCH 25, 2016 FROM 5-8PM

The Philip Slein Gallery is pleased to present Monochromatic Paintings by Robert Sagerman. Merging painting, sculpture, and Jewish mysticism, Robert Sagerman approaches each one of his textured, abstract compositions as an act of devotion. He begins by creating his own rich mixtures of oil paint, which he squeezes in individual dabs directly onto the canvas. He builds up thick, massing monochromatic surfaces in works that toe the line between painting and sculptural relief. Along the way, he counts and records every single one of his marks and tracks the time he spends on each composition, titling his works after their total number of marks—often reaching into the many thousands. This is in keeping with an ancient kabbalistic practice of meditation through counting, which was seen as a route to the divine. Each one of Sagerman’s paintings, is an act of meditation, the embodiment of the artist’s striving toward the sacred.

Alison Hall, Madonna, Flatface, 2016, oil, raphite and venetian plaster on panel, 13.75 x 11 inches

In addition, the gallery is pleased to introduce Alison Hall whose work is also rooted in ritual, meditation, and repetition. Like Sagerman’s work, Hall’s paintings appear to be monochromatic, however, upon further inspection, they are captivating in their formal complexity and subtlety.

LINDA SKRAINKA: REFLECTIONS
Drawings and Paintings by Linda SkrainkaThe exhibit runs from March 4-May 15, 2016Opening Reception March 4 from 5-8 pm
More than 50 works produced between 1965 and 2013 by celebrated St. Louis artist, Linda Skrainka, are a part of a new exhibition at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art which opens with a 5 p.m. reception on Friday, March 4, 2016. The exhibition runs through May 15, 2016, in the Judith and Adam Aronson Gallery at Saint Louis University Museum of Art.

The exhibit, which is free and open to the public features paintings and drawings by Linda Skrainka on loan from private collections, is a critical survey of her career as an artist. These artworks chronicle the artist's formal concerns and the often overlooked details of everyday life for which she had a keen eye. Excerpts from her personal journal provide additional background for many of the artworks, and contribute to a deeper understanding of their meaning.
Skrainka's study of art history informs her formal concerns of balancing color and composition, while advancing the content. These concerns are consistent throughout the exhibition, from highly geometric compositions depicting interiors to the organic shapes in the Charlie's Gift series.\

Octarrarium
Opening reception on Friday, March 11 from 5:30 – 7:30pm,

The Regional Arts Commission (RAC) presents Octarrarium which represents the latest iteration of large scale video installation systems developed by collaborators Kevin Harris and Chad Eivins. The piece will serve as both a gallery installation and a platform for sound performance. A multi-sensory and immersive environment, Octarrarium, is created by encompassing the viewer within eight large projections of live, interactive video.

Inside Octarrarium, every movement and sound made will affect the surroundings, controlling an image blend of live cameras and analog video synthesis. The result can be personal or communal and is dependent on everything and everyone within the fortified structure. It is the relationship between art, public, and environment that is being reorganized and reconsidered.

At its core, Octarrarium demonstrates that art is not restricted to objects and commodities. It can be extended to an idea, an emotion, and most importantly, a shared human experience.
In addition to an experiential gallery installation, Octarrarium will host collaborative events with many St. Louis artists.
