Fontbonne University Fine Arts Gallery: Friday, 26 June 2015

"Untitled # 1" is a group show of 5 artists including Giada Otten, Erica Popp, Ray Hummel, Albert Yowshien Kuo, and David Rocco. The show's primary emphasis is in photography and painting running for one week only.

Opening Reception is Friday June 26, 6:00 - 9:00 pm. The show runs for one week starting June 26 - July 4 located in the main gallery atFontbonne University Fine Arts Gallery .
This event is free and open to the public, please join us and spread the word to friends and family.

Giada Otten's Dada inspired images of manipulation of the human form have been the trademark of her diverse series of work. She works with Italian models, artists, musicians, and colleagues as the figures that embody her work.http://www.giadaotten.com/

Erica Popp's work in photography and ceramics display a close attention to detail in subject and craft. Her images travel the spectrum of haunting manipulations to the quiet details in our landscapes and in nature. http://ericapopp.com/

Raymond Hummel juggles the life of leisure and music as his endeavors spread across boundaries yet still making time to observe and document his experiences and meetings in the people and places of his life through painting. You can feel his gaze in the subject of all his work that creates a lasting freshness and documentation. His eye for subject is inescapable in his paintings.

Albert Yowshien Kuo  "Never listened to me. He always did whatever he wanted." said Tim Liddy. His work changes nearly every year dedicating an entire year to a particular subject matter as he searches for the right conversation in his paintings. Though his subject matter shifts, there is an ever looming presence of design and architecture in his compositions. The work draws from his own life experiences along with referencing influences in music and film. The dialogue in his images is often strong and memorable, like going to the movies. Albert will be showing paintings and installation in the show. http://www.albertyowshien.com/

David Rocco is the road warrior never without a film camera, including backups just in case. His documentation of events in his life take us to the most bizarre places in the country and the most comfortable places we could feel at home in. His work focuses on strong composition and lighting that pull us into the setting often making the viewer part of the conversation as opposed to being a spy. We are no fly on the wall, we are right there with him. daveyrocco.com

Green Door art gallery: Friday, 10 July 2015

Green Door art gallery in Webster Groves Presents  “Two Year Birthday Bash”
July 1 – August 29, 2015
Opening social held on Friday, July 10,  from 5-9 p.m.

Green Door art gallery will be celebrating “Two Year Birthday Bash” for their two year anniversary which will feature the best pastels of Gateway Pastel Artists.  GPA was founded in 1998 and has educated artists and the public about the beauty and permanency of the pastel medium for the past 17 years in the St. Louis area. The organization has over 40 members and is a part of the International Association of Pastel Societies which has members all over the world.

Pastels have been used as an art medium since the 1600’s. Pastels are sticks of pure pigment held together with a binder, used to create beautiful colorful paintings not necessarily pastel colors.  The pastels of today are very permanent and will last longer than the 100 year old life of an oil painting because they never crack or yellow.  Some of the more famous pastel artists were Impressionist Degas-known for his ballerinas, Toulouse-Lautrec and Impressionist, Mary Cassatt-known for her paintings of mothers and babies.

Hours are Wednesday thru Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm- Closed Monday and Tuesday

Opening Reception—Battle On The Board: Chess During World War II

7:00 p.m. Introduction and remarks by Emily Allred, assistant curator, World Chess Hall of Fame

Though chess is often perceived as a game of war, it also serves as a means of passing long hours or as an aid in recuperation for members of the military. Battle on the Board: Chess during World War II provides insight into how a game modeled upon battle can provide a sense of home and community as well as demonstrating the dramatic changes the war brought to the game.

The exhibition includes prisoner of war chess sets from the collections of the National Museum of the Marine Corps and National Museum of the United States Air Force, archival material from the John G. White Chess Collection at the Cleveland Public Library, and highlights from the collection of the World Chess Hall of Fame.

Isolation Room/Gallery Kit: Thursday, 25 June 2015

JOE FLUNKER: UNTITLED
Curated by Dana Turkovic

Opening Reception: Thursday, June 25, 6pm-8pm

Isolation Room/Gallery Kit is pleased to present an installation by late artist Joe Flunker (Nov 26, 1982 - May 25, 2014). A large series of small but unique glass pieces fill the space, dripping from the ceiling inside the 9 x 9 foot cube. An experimental multiples series, this glass work was an extension of Flunker’s goblet work, utilizing a tiny spiral motif with simplistic and strategic color play. His self-taught torch skills were supplemented by hot glass studies at SIUE and the Cesare Toffolo workshop at Pittsburgh Glass Center. This exhibition is a testament to Flunker’s dedication to his craft and embodies the revised mission behind Isolation Room/Gallery Kit. As we have cut back on regular exhibitions at home to focus on our international projects, we have been looking only for those works that provide meaningful narrative for the box on Dewey Avenue.

REESEgallery: Friday, 26 June 2015

Please join us for the artists' opening reception of "All Formalities Aside: The Curious Encounter of Kit Keith and Gary Passanise" on Friday June 26th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

"An object makes infinity private," Joseph Brodsky noted.  After contemplating the art objects of Gary Passanise and Kit Keith that statement might be expanded upon: "An object, like a close friendship, makes infinity private."  Quiet undertones mark time in their work (as in their friendship) even as their creative voices distinguish themselves.  This exhibition explores the role of creativity in friendship - and also its inverse - the role of friendship in creativity.

WITH NOT FOR:
Art and Archeology from Alumni of the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute

The Regional Arts Commission (RAC) presents WITH NOT FOR: Art and Archeology from Alumni of the Community Arts Training (CAT) Institute. We want to showcase, document, and amplify the process of how the network of CAT Institute graduates work within communities with art as the common language. Through visual work and a series of performances, we are mapping our connections and multiple layers of experiences; exhibiting some of the artifacts, archeology and anthropology of arts-based community development projects and programs; and speaking out loud our manifesto of the powerful intersections of community and art.

WITH NOT FOR hones into a few words a key principle of the CAT Institute. In the field of arts-based community development, the most potent work is that in which we are not doing things for people in our communities but working with them - side by side - to create the better world we wish to live in together.

"Badlands Evening", an oil painting by NAA member Judith Repke

Northside Art Association Member Exhibit to Open at Framations June 12

Framations Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibit of work by members of Northside Art Association.  Northside Art Association (NAA) began in 1955 with a small group of artists who gathered at a local library to discuss their art.  Within a few years, the group had grown and they began holding open air art shows and an annual group exhibition.  It did not take long for the membership numbers to grow and for the group to become a non-profit organization. With monthly meetings with demonstrating artists and monthly painting competitions, the group holds membership meetings at the Prairie Commons Library and displays throughout the year at the Florissant Civic Centre.  In recent years, the group has expanded its offerings to add a monthly paint-in, a spring and fall workshop, and a web site.

This NAA Member Exhibition will be on display beginning with an Opening Reception on Friday, June 12 from 6-8 pm. The exhibit will continue through July 16. During the full length of the exhibit, the public will be able to vote for People's Choice. The winner of People's Choice will be on display for an additional 5 weeks after the close of this exhibit. More information about this exhibit can be found at www.framations.com.

A New Use of the Self
featuring Lyndon Barrois, Tom Holmes, Janez Jansa, Chelsea Knight, Sara Magenheimer and Chloe Seibert

On Friday, June 12th, The Luminary opens two new exhibitions for its summer program. Opening in the main gallery, A New Use of the Self is a group exhibition responding to the complex negotiation between the personal and political self within an increasingly commercialized terrain.

In Giorgio Agamben's writings, "a new use of the self" considers the biopolitical implications of the individual after the society of the spectacle, speculating on how through an emptying of identity, transformation is again made possible. Featuring Lyndon Barrois, Tom Holmes, Janez Jansa, Chelsea Knight, Sara Magenheimer and Chloe Seibert, the exhibition features forms of pseudo-portraiture that is accompanied by a parallel erasure, reenactments of the self as one object among many, and emptied out sites of transformation.

Also opening in the Entry Gallery
Jessica Harvey, Future Great City of the World

Can the dreams and scars of a 137 year old secret society still be seen today? While incorporating photography, sculpture, and archival material, Future Great City of the World uses the 1972 unveiling of the Grand Oracle of the Veiled Prophet Society as a starting point to investigate the organization's lasting impact on the physical and cultural landscape of this city.

INDELIBLE: HISTORIC AFRICAN-AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHS AND ARTIFACTS FROM THE COLLECTION OF ROBERT E. GREEN
June 5, 2015 - August 15, 2015

Built over 20 years, the Robert E. Green collection of vernacular portraits of African-Americans stemmed from the collector's interest in countering the negative Jim Crow imagery often found in 19th century woodcuts and lithographs. The ambrotypes, tintypes and albumen prints in this exhibition, and in the collection, mostly photographed in portrait studios in St. Louis, represent elegantly attired African-American women and men in formal studio portraits, which are an indelible record of their culture in a border state in the mid- to late- 19th century. A collector with a discerning eye and a passion for history and culture, Green has also assembled a selection of fine African and other historical artifacts relating to his own background and history. Highlights include a rare carte-de-visite photograph of Frederick Douglass from the 1860s, originally in the family collection of lawyer and abolitionist, George B. Vashon.

AN UNCERTAIN PRESENT: SMALL TOWN ARCHITECTURE BY MARK APPLING FISHER
June 5, 2015 - August 29, 2015

Mark Appling Fisher explores the once vibrant towns found within a day's drive of St. Louis, "collecting" buildings and scenes in landscapes that have changed from commercial centers to lonely museums from another time. Born of necessity, these small towns catered to the farms that were built up around them. But, as economic depressions hit, superhighways bisected the landscape and shopping habits changed, small rural towns fell into disrepair. Fisher documents rural structures, transforming them, through photography, into iconic, almost sculptural objects that help to preserve memories of their former life.

PICTURE THE MUSIC: DIRECTOR’S CHOICE V
June 5, 2015 - August 1, 2015

Each year, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra sponsors Picture the Music, an art contest open to children in grades K-6 from the St. Louis/Metro East area, who are asked to respond to classical music selections in visual terms. The children's colorful interpretations of music by composers as diverse as Mozart, Glinka and Tchaikovsky, speak eloquently of the ability of music to stir the soul and raise the spirit. In this collaboration between the Sheldon Art Galleries and the Saint Louis Symphony, Sheldon Art Galleries' director Olivia Lahs-Gonzales, who has been an invited Picture the Music contest juror since 2001, chose 50 works from over 500 entries received by the Symphony. This exhibition differs from the Symphony's touring exhibit of 100 works, which traveled to St. Louis-area malls immediately after the jurying process. Many of those chosen for The Sheldon's Director's Choice exhibit are exclusive to this exhibit. This year, students listened to the 4th movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, also known as The Pastoral Symphony. Finished in 1808, it is an expressive piece that was inspired by the rural landscape. The 4th movement depicts a violent thunder storm, which passes as the movement comes to an end.

THE 2014 CRITICAL MASS FOR THE VISUAL ARTS CREATIVE STIMULUS AWARD EXHIBITION: TATE FOLEY, DAVID JOHNSON AND MEL WATKIN
June 5, 2015 - August 1, 2015

Since 2008, the not-for-profit group Critical Mass for the Visual Arts has awarded artists and artist collaborations with funding, and an opportunity to exhibit their work through the Creative Stimulus Award Program. The intention of the award is to encourage artists to use the funds to pursue special projects, experiment with new techniques, or to gain better insight into their own working processes. Each spring, a new group of award winners is selected by a jury panel that is comprised of local artists and arts administrators, as well as former Creative Stimulus Award winners. The following year, the selected award winners are given the opportunity to show their work in a group exhibition that is hosted by a regional art gallery or organization. This year, the Sheldon Art Galleries is pleased to partner with Critical Mass for the Visual Arts to present the 2014 Creative Stimulus Award Exhibition featuring Tate Foley, David Johnson and Mel Watkin.
