Tappmeyer House: Friday-Saturday 1-2 March 2013

Teachers for Tappmeyer 'Exchange' Art Show Reception - March 1, 7-9 pm & March 2, 2-4 pm

The Creve Coeur Arts Commission invites the public to attend a free reception highlighting artwork from students at DeSmet Jesuit and Whitfield high schools. The Exchange Art Show Reception showcasing local talent will be held Friday, March 1, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., and Saturday, March 2, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Tappmeyer House located in Millennium Park at 2 Barnes West Drive.

This unique art exhibit is a collaboration among the Arts Commission, The Tappmeyer Foundation and art teachers from each of the participating schools. Recently, 46 high school art students from DeSmet and Whitfield were randomly paired and each brought an artwork sample to share with their
partner. Paired students had 30 minutes to view and discuss each other’s artwork and then challenged to create new artwork inspired by their partner’s work. All four artworks from each pair will be displayed together at the Tappmeyer House for public display at the reception.

The Exchange Art Show will remain after the receptions at the Tappmeyer House through Thursday, March 7. Group tours are available by appointment by calling 314-872-2570.

PHD Gallery: Saturday, 9 March 2013

Please join us Saturday, March 9, 2013, 7-10PM for the opening reception of
WATERWORLD: Aquatic Glass by Michelle Hamilton and
Underwater Nude Photography by Ed Freeman

"No, Kevin Costner will not be making an appearance at this version of Waterworld.  Something equally great in the realm of art is taking  place. Michelle Hamilton's amazing, gravity defying aquatic glass is the perfect complement to L.A. photographer Ed Freeman's impossible
underwater nude ballet shots." ~ ALIVE Magazine

Serene.  Hypnotic.  Otherworldly.  Like swimmers in an enchanted bay, the graceful bathers in Ed Freeman’s photographs appear more mermaid  than human.  Michelle Hamilton’s glass bowls are multi-colored Sea Anemones & Medusas whose delicate radial tendrils float upwards as if
underwater.  The juxtaposition between Freeman’s photographs & Hamilton’s glass is like a twilight skinny dip in Hanalei.  24 of  Freeman’s digital prints and 18 of Hamiliton’s glass vessels are on view at PHD Gallery March 9 - May 18, 2013, with a free reception for

Good Citizen Gallery: Friday, 12 April 2013

Good Citizen invites you to A Broken Line, work by Greg Edmondson
April 12 - May 11, 2013
Opening Reception Friday, April 12  6 -10 PM

Greg Edmondson's studio practice frequently employs the use of simple generative systems. These systems are computational by definition and imply a level of predictability. However, their application produces both foreseeable, and unforeseen results with the potential for mutation, decay and collapse inherent within the system, and it's means of implementation. These works are produced largely by hand, employing a pre-industrial and decidedly imperfect production process.

Repetition, sequence and dispersal have always been the primary means by which information (both biological and technological) is stored and transmitted. These works are fundamentally less about the transmission of specific meaning than the transmission of specific visual information.

Their digital sensibility and hand drawn execution creates a hybrid aesthetic;brimming with information, begging for interpretation.

Jacoby Arts Center: Friday, 1 March 2013

Soon to be on display in the Main Gallery at Jacoby Arts Center is a multi-media group show featuring 12 artists whose works demonstrate the formal, conceptual, and social considerations of "Graphic Content." This exhibition explores the multiple implications of the word "graphics" — of or relating to the pictorial arts (Merriam-Websteer)—as it relates to drawing, painting, printmaking, design, photography, and video.

The show also considers how contemporary graphics function amid the political issues of today. By including hot topics such as gender and religion, individuals may engage with the "content" of the images while asking themselves "where do I fit within the context of this image?" In this show, an image does not simply exist; it is constructed with meaning which takes more than a mere glance to appreciate its complexity.

Join the artists for an opening reception on Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. There will also be a lecture on Thursday, March 21, from 7 to 8 p.m. accompanying the exhibition. Jeremy Shipley will host a conversation on the influence of culture, war, recession, and rebellion in the arts that will be followed by a group discussion on anti-art as well as the emergence of mixed media, inter-media, and new technologies in art and design today. There will be food and refreshments for both events. This exhibit will run from March 1 through April 6.

Located at 627 East Broadway in Alton, Illinois, Jacoby Arts Center's hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with late hours on Thursdays until 8 p.m. The Center is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Bruno David Gallery: Friday, 1 March 2013

RICHARD HULL: RECENT PAINTINGS
MARIO TREJO: Projected Edifices (Front Room)
DICKSON BEALL: Borders & Boundaries: Virtual & Real (New Media Room)

March 1-30, 2013
Opening Reception:
Friday, March 1, 2013, from 5 to 9 pm

Public Hours: Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present Richard Hull’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, on view March 1-30, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, March 1, 2013. A catalogue, RICHARD HULL: RECENT PAINTINGS, will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.

Richard Hull’s paintings fill their canvases with large swathes of color; blocks of opaque hues are overlaid with sweeping brushstrokes clustered together that function like ripples on the water—but far less transient. Rings within a tree may more appropriate, as the description evokes the same feelings of growth that Hull’s painterly gestures achieve. The comparison of grooves on a record player describes some of the patterns, but neither the liveliness of the purposeful irregularities within Hull’s stroke widths nor the texture of thick paint upon the canvas.

Although Hull’s paintings are not traditional portraits, each artwork has a distinct feeling of character. Hull applies a layer of melted beeswax to his canvas before painting, making the rich colors found in his work possible. Then, he paints shapes of hot and cold colors against each other, creating a skewed sense of perspective. This confusion of space, in addition to Hull’s use of repeating lines and simplified shapes, keeps the viewer from identifying a clear subject. The general weight of the masses of shapes often resembles a portrait silhouette, suggesting a living presence.

In the Front Room, the gallery presents an exhibition titled “Projected Edifices” by Mario Trejo. This is his second one-person exhibition at Bruno David Gallery. In his paintings, Trejo visually explores the macro and microcosmic struggle through manic mark-making. His work is a meticulous accumulation of idiosyncratic marks that, at a distance, appear as dark and ethereal cosmic forms, but upon closer inspection reveal themselves as an expanse of scratches that crumble into a Promethean struggle. The hundreds of thousands of marks create illusion of an emerging form, exhibiting the artist’s conscious and sensitive attention to both detail and entirety. The drawings begin to expose small universes, each a relic of the arduous performance of repeated gestures. The compulsive mark-making reflects the eternal battle between the artist and his surroundings, but the product becomes a facsimile of the sublime remoteness of the universe in miniature, revealing at once loneliness, futility, chaos and uncertainty. The artist aptly describes his work as a metaphor for imperium under which we all reside.

In the New Media Room, the gallery presents an installation video work titled “Borders & Boundaries: Virtual & Real,” by Dickson Beall. In his new work, multimedia artist Dickson Beall explores art, from the time of cave painting to present day. In this necessarily selective review, the artist’s focus is on the inter-relationship of expanding “empires” and “bridges” of communication – suggested by superimposed images of the Empire State Building (an emblem of power) and the Brooklyn Bridge (connecting two economies). Using a time line of art images, multiple video tracks and mirrors, Beall creates an immersive experience. His virtual video installation contrasts with his storyboard narrative of small hand-made prints and a large oil painting. He employs Buckminister Fuller’s Dymaxion map to recall the unity of landmasses, our “one island earth” in geologic time, and humankind’s subsequent efforts at ownership — protecting, defending and expanding carved out territories. Beall’s work speaks to the cultural/political/economic implications in the increasing connectivity of virtual reality and the resulting loss of interpersonal communication.

Dream Blisters
March 6-April 10, 2013
Opening Reception March 6, 4-7pm

Please join us at Gallery Visio on March 6th for the opening of Dream Blisters, a solo exhibit by Robert Treece. Treece possesses the ability to capture the viewer’s attention with his immense detail, vibrant colors, multi-layered textures and compositions. He simultaneously shifts between realism and surrealism, allowing each style influencing the other. “Over the years I have found that one style painting will inform the other, realism helps my focus with color mixing, paint handling, patience, etc. and surrealism teaches me to focus on composition, color arrangement, terror management etc.” For Treece, the concepts inspiring his realist work appears almost instantly, contrasting with his surrealist paintings; these concepts are undetermined, and allowing the painting to evolve on its own.
He creates beauty from the unknown, and the undetermined. This balance between such contrasting styles offers a unique and broad spectrum of work, leaving the viewer to question the difference between dream and reality.

“I saw and see fear and discomfort as being far more beneficial to the creative process than comfort and encouragement. Shake it up as hard as you can and see what falls out.”

Cindy Tower: Nest Egg
March 1 - 30, 2013
Opening Reception Friday, March 1  6 -10 PM

Nest Egg demonstrates how the rich get richer by viscerally and visually exposing loopholes in the United States tax code favoring the rich. The installation is an enormous three-dimensional tax-dodging structure and deficit diorama made from found and recycled materials. The installation offers a visceral, emotional experience that not only engages but physically engulfs the viewer in a self-contained environment of corporate greed and money-drunken gluttony.

Cindy Tower conceived of this sculpture with the fiscal cliff in view. Shortly after a visit to Connecticut she witnessed scores of three-million-dollar homes being replaced by eight-million-dollar homes -- in the depths of the most significant financial recession since the early 20th Century. In an attempt to understand some of this financial black magic, she researched tax rules, corporate structures, and secret dealings of American business royalty. Nest Egg is the giant, three-dimensional artistic offspring of her journey. The interpretation is constructed in sections from scavenged materials Tower assembled inside her Saint Louis apartment.

Isolation Room/Gallery Kit: Friday, 8 March 2013

Steven Deo: Global War
March 8 - April 4, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, March 8, 2013, 6pm-8pm

I wonder if Deo meant Global War (as well as another plastic soldier piece -- an adult playing war with a child) as a comment on the well-known patriotism of Indian nations, the disproportionate number of Native servicemen, and the much-mentioned “warrior tradition.” He was always questioning the status quo in his art. As Margaret Archuleta has suggested, these pieces ask that we contemplate “What messages about war are taught to children as they play ‘army’?”

Deo worked with Native issues such as diabetes (via Fry Bread), commodities, and small pox, and all his work came from a strong base in Native culture. But he was not afraid to tackle broad issues, like war, the environment, the exploitation of women’s bodies – all of which of course affect Native people like everyone else. His material strategy was accumulation, or accretion. For instance, in an exhibition on climate change that I curated, he made two beautiful full-sized bare-limbed white trees bearing fruit. The one made from the pulp of encyclopedia pages to represent knowledge was appropriately displayed in the University of Colorado’s main library. For the years that he was given, Deo made art that was both critical and innovative. Global War is one of his most significant works.   – Lucy R. Lippard

*Isolation Room/Gallery Kit will be showing Deo’s 2010 version of Global War, a copy of the 2005 original.

Photographs by Ray Marklin, Odell Mitchell, Jr., Kathleen M. Sanker and Jennifer Silverberg
February 22- May 4, 2013

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Sheldon Concert Hall, The Sheldon commissioned Ray Marklin, Odell Mitchell, Jr., Kathleen Sanker and Jennifer Silverberg to each create a body of work in and around the historic building during the 2011-2012 season.  The year was packed with over 422 events, including concerts, art exhibits, openings and lectures, educational concerts, art workshops, weddings, recording sessions, community events and fundraisers, dance performances, and much more.  In the resulting exhibition of 100 “moments” from the year’s events, the four photographers show their keen storytelling abilities, and render a wonderful snapshot of what The Sheldon is, does and means today.

This exhibition features 40 drawings and paintings by Edward Boccia made between 1941 and 1969.  Known for his large, expressionist diptychs, triptychs and polyptychs, Boccia infused his canvases with figures from Greek and Italian mythology and Christian symbolism.  His paintings exhibit an affinity to the work of Max Beckmann, and his early drawings to those of Vincent Van Gogh. Boccia was born in 1921 in Newark, New Jersey and received his art training at Pratt Institute, the Art Students League of New York and Columbia University.  He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during World War II.  During the war, Boccia used art supplies sent from home and painted from cafés and foxholes, sometimes during intense fighting.

SLU Museum of Art: Friday, 8 February 2013

Roxanne Phillips: In Print opens with a reception in the museum'€™s community gallery on Friday, Feb. 8 from 5 pm- 7:30 p.m.

Phillips is a printmaker. The prints in this exhibit have the theme of architecture, although loosely interpreted as €œhaving structure.€ Her printed images range from geometric buildings to biomorphic clouds. Many of the images originate from photographs taken by the artist. These photos provided a "€œtemplate"€ for Phillips as she modifies colors, crops and assembles photos to create the printed image.

The full-color pieces feature the reductive relief process wherein one matrix is used and layers are carved away each time a new color is added. Each print has anywhere from three to twelve layers. The black and white pieces consist of relief with pen or the Intaglio process.

Gallery 210: Friday, 7 February 2013

Rhythm, Line and Form: The Sculpture of John Medwedeff
February 7- April 13, 2013
Gallery 210

Rhythm, Line and Form: The Sculpture of John Medwedeff opens today at Gallery 210. A reception for the artist runs from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Mr. Medwedeff will give a gallery talk at 6:15PM.

The exhibition will feature selected sculptures and design maquettes, drawings and photographs for large-scale projects. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Medwedeff's 25-year career as an artist and metalsmith.

In addition to large-scale sculptures, most about 20-feet tall, Medwedeff and his crew do architectural metal-work ranging from new designs to repair and replacement of classic metal-work. At any given time, the staff can be working on several different projects.

"Blacksmithing, traditionally, has involved journeymen training at one forge for a few years and then moving on to another several times before starting their own," Medwedeff said.

Landscapes and rivers from his youth in Tennessee and adult life in the Midwest influence the shape and form of John's work. "This show contains two kinds of interiors, architectural and psychological space. The first explores how people engage or do not engage within the structures of a physical environment. The latter explores the internal situation and the ways that people engage with the structures of an emotional landscape. They encounter obstacles and shelters, structures that create community, and structures that divide. I paint these as a means of trying to understand the contradictions in life and the inner invisible world."

Craft Alliance in the Kranzberg Arts Center: Friday, 1 February 2013

ANN CODDINGTON RAST: FLOCK
at Craft Alliance in Grand Center
Opening reception: Friday, February 1 from 6 - 9 pm.
Show runs through May 26, 2013.

The evening will begin with Ann Coddington Rast, a well-known fiber artist, giving an Artist Talk at 6pm. The gallery space is filled with 1,100 birds in flight. These slipcast ceramic birds are suspended in the air above the viewers' heads, creating a powerful atmosphere of tension.

Coddington Rast states, "I continue to be fascinated by the complex, metaphoric language of birds. I have often used birds to represent an ultimate point of freedom, symbiotic relationships, and the dichotomy of life and death. Birds are mysterious, intriguing creatures with long literary histories - from Poe's 'The Raven,' to nursery rhymes like 4 and 20 Blackbirds, to Angelou's 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.' Another mesmerizing feature is their tendency to move in groups with a seeming collective consciousness. They respond to each other, and to waves of air, changing direction with no visible outward communication. They are at once individuals and part of a whole that seems to embody a gestalt philosophy."
