Rhythm, Line and Form: The Sculpture of John Medwedeff

Rhythm, Line and Form: The Sculpture of John Medwedeff opens today at Gallery 210. A reception for the artist runs from 5:30PM to 7:30PM. Mr. Medwedeff will give a gallery talk at 6:15PM.
The exhibition will feature selected sculptures and design maquettes, drawings and photographs for large-scale projects. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of Medwedeff's 25-year career as an artist and metalsmith.
In addition to large-scale sculptures, most about 20-feet tall, Medwedeff and his crew do architectural metal-work ranging from new designs to repair and replacement of classic metal-work. At any given time, the staff can be working on several different projects.
"Blacksmithing, traditionally, has involved journeymen training at one forge for a few years and then moving on to another several times before starting their own," Medwedeff said.
Landscapes and rivers from his youth in Tennessee and adult life in the Midwest influence the shape and form of John's work. Childhood travels to Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Egypt, Greece, Germany, India, England and Alaska exposed him to a range of culture, geology, art, and architecture. At 19 he began a 3-year blacksmithing apprenticeship with James Wallace at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN and afterwards earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from SIU Carbondale.
All of the Gallery 210 events are free and open to the public. Public parking for gallery 210 is available at the South Millennium Parking garage on the east side of East Drive on the UM-St. Louis Campus. Handicapped parking is available behind Gallery 210.
Gallery 210 is on the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 44 East Drive, TCC between the North UM-St. Louis Metro Station and Touhill Performing Arts Center.
