Marbles Yoga Studio and Gallery: Friday, 14 August 2009

Marbles Gallery exhibits "Parallel Reality" abstract landscape paintings by Michael Bolton based upon photographs by J. Roberts from August 3 - 31.

Opening Reception Friday, August 14 from 6-9 p.m. Meet the artists, enjoy a glass of wine.

Michael Bolton pushes away from structure and formalities in his paintings creating original work with color, texture, and flow. He rarely uses a paint brush. Instead, he uses pallet knives and screwdrivers and a variety of medium. Many of his abstracts consist of ordinary house paint, housing caulk, and other everyday materials transformed into a creation to enjoy.

J. Roberts uses photography to show others what she sees. She shoots without flash using Canon 40D on a tripod relying upon color and light to illuminate carefully chosen destinations that allow her to see something new: a ghost town, a fallen city, beautiful beach, countryside or a vacant building complex. Her adrenaline rush comes from discovering places and preserving their beauty for other to see.

When We Build, Let Us Think That We Build ForeverOpening Reception

Saturday, August 8th, 2009 from 6-9pm

When We Build, Let Us Think That We Build Forever is a curated group show focused on the intersection of natural and manmade environments. Ranging from ecological experiments to meditations on the precariousness of our built environment, the exhibit presents a poetic view of the world that surrounds us and our effect on it. When We Build… features the work of primarily St. Louis-based artists, giving a local viewpoint and immediacy to the exhibit.

The exhibit brings together a broad base of St. Louis artists, from the internationally recognized work of Peter Marcus to the emerging work of Brea McAnally, BJ Vogt and Christine D’Epiro. Peter Marcus will contribute several pieces from his striking Horsehead series (provided by Bruno David Gallery) that focus on a single Victorian house “emblematic of an America-or, at least, the idea—of an America that has ceased to exist.” Brea, who also curated the exhibit, has created an interactive outdoor cityscape that invites viewers to add water to an adjacent dam that will, at some point in the evening, overflow and flood the city. The work is a ambivalent exploration of the role of man in natural disaster, inviting questions of implication and responsibility.

They are joined by Luminary Resident Artist Christine D’Epiro, who is transforming brown paper grocery bags into a room-sized installation depicting a nightscape. Entitled Night, the exhibition responds to our present shared economic situation with imagery that represents both a conclusion and a cyclical occurrence. B.J. Vogt is also contributing sculptural pieces depicting ‘natural’ environments or settings using mass produced or easily replicated ‘man-made’ materials, such as cardboard, PVC pipes, plastic implements, lamps and other electrical devices.

The opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 8th from 6-9pm and will remain on view on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2-7pm and on Saturdays from 12-5pm through the end of September.

Alison Ouellette-Kirby: Home From Work To Find Your Spaniel Turned Into A Wolf

July 31 - August 29, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, July 31 6pm - 10pm

Alison Ouellette-Kirby's upcoming show Home From Work To Find Your Spaniel Turned Into A Wolf takes a critical look at the underlying concepts and definition of "home." Her sculptures focus on the iconic home from the board game Monopoly™, a form she is obsessed with and a game she hated as a child. A game whose premise she describes as presenting "robber-baron style capitalism as something light and fun." A theme that seems all too familiar in the current political and economic climate and its relationship to one's "home,"

Alongside political motives are Alison's personal definitions of "home" and how these ideas shift with age and geography. Alison's work investigates how this ever-changing definition has a direct impact on the physical and psychological landscape of the country. Alison's Canadian background creates a thinly veiled difference between her and her surrounding community; a foreigner who is not quite foreign enough.

Alison's work is masterly crafted, engaging a variety of media and mechanisms. Her work includes larger metal sculptures that clang and crash as the viewer interacts with them as well as delicate jewelry sized pieces that seem fragile to the touch. Alison's craftsmanship and attention to detail result in engaging objects that demand our focus and attention.

Opening Reception Friday, July 17 from 6-9 p.m. Meet the artists, enjoy a glass of wine. Free and open to the public

Sally B. Simpson photographs under natural lighting situations, with very little or no use of camera filters to capture the beauty and simplicity of everyday subjects using a variety of camera types, including the medium format 120 film toy camera, the Holga. Intrigued by places and subjects that exhibit a haunting sense of abandonment, as well as images that evoke a strong sense of familiarity and simplicity, Simpson chooses to photograph with her Holga often. With its cheap construction, images produced from the Holga often yield photographs with characteristic light leaks, blurs and vignetting, adding depth and individuality to each photograph.

Mark Tiedemann, premiers his black and white art photography inspired by the work of Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and other members of the f64 Group. During his commercial photography career as a proficient black and white lab technician, he has continuously recorded and printed but never shown his own work.

Mad Art: Friday, 10 July 2009

Opening Reception for Work Inspired by Cowboy Mouth
Friday, July 10, 7 pm to 11 pm
Adam Andrews, Ron Buechele, Katie Clancy, and Aunia Kahn have created an exhibition of art inspired by Cowboy Mouth. This exhibit opens prior to the play, on Friday, July 10, 2009, with a free opening reception from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. The exhibit continues through July 28, 2009.

Cowboy Mouth is a semi autobiographical, one act play written by Sam Shepard. One of his lesser known plays, Cowboy Mouth owes its genesis to an affair between Shepard and rock star Patti Smith. Shepard left his wife and small son to take up residence in Manhattan's Chelsea Hotel with Smith. Shepard and Smith co-wrote the original roles of Slim and Cavale and were to play the roles in a production scheduled at The American Place Theatre in 1971. Shepard fled following a preview performance, deserting Patti Smith in life and in art, to return to his wife and child. The play never opened.
The characters are complex, intense, and at times, disturbing. Sarah Jones plays Cavale, the Patti Smith character, who is obsessed with death and frequently flips into periods of bizarre fantasy. The Sam Shepard character, Slim, struggles with the meaning of art and the role of the artist. Slim, played by John Joern, is unable to move, yet is at complete unrest. Jimmy Griffin plays Lobster Man, a phantom of the couple's paranoia.
The play was written at the time when Shepard wanted to be a rock and roll star rather than a plawright, and he experimented with the inclusion of live music in his plays. This production of Cowboy Mouth features live music performed by Jesus Was a Sullivan Band following each performance. On July 17 and 18, musician Irene Jones will perform prior to curtain.

In August of 2008, Craft Alliance opened a second facility in the Kranzberg Arts Center in Grand Center and began an Artist-in-Residence program. This competitive program gives emerging and established artists a 9 month residency opportunity to focus on their areas of clay, fiber or metals and then exhibit their work in the exhibition space. In this exhibition, Gina Alvarez has created a wall of delicate clay doilies that transforms her ideas of domesticity and the hand-made. Melody Evans is inspired by a scientific microscopic world and designed an installation of multiple organic clay forms and layers of plexi-glass that aims to create a sense of awe and wonderment at the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Damia Smith’s investigations of nature are not only showcased in her large scale, bold and bright jewelry but also shown creeping up one of the walls in the gallery space. This exhibition will be open from July 19th until August 16th. Daily gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Please join us for a reception to celebrate the work of Jeff Sippel, Jenny Boudreault, and Joe Chesla. Thursday, July 9, 2009, 6 8 p.m.

“Action Reaction,” features Jeff Sippel. Sippels’s abstract prints are extremely expressive in color and line.

The second exhibition, “Letting go a breath I didn’t know I was
holding,” features artwork by Joe Chesla, who filled over 3,000 plastic bags with a mixture of porcelain and algae and installed them directly on the Reiners Gallery windows. The way that light and heat reach the bags will influence the
algae’s growth and determine the color and pattern of the installation.

In the Schmidt and Cox Galleries, “Awakenings,” features Jenny Boudreault, who creates portraits of everyday people. She
uses watercolor or oil paint on board, which often allows the wood grain to show through and provide texture and tone to the skin.

The exhibition continues through August 22.

Bruce Burton: Observation and Formulation
Please join us for the OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, July 10, 2009, 6pm-9pm
(exhibit on view through September 4, 2009)

Observation and Formulation is a body of work that consists of images, sculpture, and installation, of seemingly unrelated and idiosyncratic materials and discarded artifacts. On the surface the objects and images seem to be disconnected, but upon closer examination, a thread reveals itself through formal and conceptual connections. A social environment begins to appear between the objects, images, and viewer. I am interested in these relationships that are formed by the viewer's response to an object and its collective, triggered memories, and perceived associations of the individual.
