MYLES KEOUGH Myles’ new work is an investigation into the artist’s “complex balance between nature and nurture.” As questioned by Myles, is it “the nature of the material or its natural reaction to the application process and the artist’s manipulation or nurturing of the material?”

ANGELA PERRY Painter and illustrator Angela works mostly on wood. Angela remarks, “Honestly I never know how each piece is going to look when I begin. I have made so many variations of flowers I can’t remember them all.”

JENN CARTER Co-owner of Aisle 1 Gallery, Jenn is a mixed media artist whose work for this
show will consist of five new 16 x 20 in. framed collages that incorporate screen prints, illustrations and graphic cut paper elements.

DANIEL GAENG Daniel’s subject matter, predominantly character-based, is derived from his
interest and appreciation of street art. His work reflects a variety of concepts ranging from completely aimless thoughts, to his feelings on worldly happenings and American politics.

DAVID LANGLEY's current work, in the form of large-scale painted collages, continues to present insightful alteration of American imagery.

Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts: Friday, 3 June 2011

Chris Smentkowski: Transcendental Voyeurism
Friday June 3, 6:00pm
(other hours by appointment 314-398-8862)

Oil Paintings: Most of the oil paintings are bizarre, fantastical, sometimes surrealistic, abstract landscapes and/or alternate imagined realities.

Ceramics: Primitive, phallic, mini mountains. Earthy spikes that are rolled into the earth behind the studio before firing.

Sound Installation: As in his previous art shows, sound installations have been an essential ingredient. Lve feedback guitar drone mimics much of his playing in Brain Transplant; however nobody will be playing the guitar, it will be set up to resonate against itself and the tone settings will be deep, dark, and mildly foreboding. The sound will be emitted through the floor of the studio space while blackened Tibetan prayer flags hover above in the ceiling.

GREGG LOUIS: "DOWN TO EARTH"
June 3 - July 24, 2011
Opening Reception for the Artist: Friday, June 3 from 6 - 8pm

Atrium Gallery invites you to our Summer Show featuring new works by former St. Lousian, Gregg Louis. A solo exhibition, Down to Earth will present a series of photographs as well as sculpture. Louis has been recognized as a dynamic, young installation artist, and is now using his constructions as subject for photography. In this series, he works with household objects to create almost surreal works. The objects are often isolated and rearranged, taking on new life not always instantly recognizable. Through appropriating objects, images, and/or experiences he utilizes artifice and transforms everyday things into strange and often humorous deviations of their original form. His works playfully question the patterns and perceptions of everyday life. Although the initial impulse may seem playful, these images are also perceived as otherwordly, sometimes unsettling as mysterious objects just landed in our realm. These works are provocative, elegant and at times humorous.

S. Carmody Photography: Friday, 1 July 2011

UpCycled – mixed media by Eric Nichols and high dynamic range photographs by Sarah Carmody

Preview Reception with artists: Friday, July 1, from 6PM-9PM
Open House with artists during the "Let Them Eat Art" festival, July 8, 6PM-11PM
Show runs though August 12, 2011
Free event, open to the public

S. Carmody Photography presents "UpCycled," featuring mixed media by Eric Nichols and high dynamic range photography by Sarah Carmody. Pieces are derived and inspired by discarded items that are reworked into new creations.

Nichols' foundation in sculpture serves as a basis for his pieces that integrate multiple mediums such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and digital imaging. The mixture of these divergent mediums presents complex problems that must be balanced, and doing so results in a calculated development of coherence.

Beautifully grained marine-grade plywood serves as the structural basis upon which Nichols' applies techniques. The wood is cut, sanded, and sometimes burned with metal objects. He then applies stencils, paint, digital prints, and found objects that may protrude from the composition. The components are situated within the layers of the gelatinous surfaces that coat the wood, thus creating a sense of depth, and dimensionality, and texture.

Carmody indulges her fascination with urban decay and the departure of reality from human perception with a new series of images acquired during a visit to G & J Recycling in Arnold, MO. In capturing the images, Carmody employs high dynamic range (HDR) a technique that produces the perception of exaggerated detail and tonal range. In actuality, all the tones and detail represented are present within the actual scene, but are outside the visible parameters of human perception. HDR is achieved by shooting the same image at various exposures, combining them, and then selectively enhancing and de-emphasizing elements as desired. Decisively extracting vignettes from the rubble, Carmody strives to create aesthetic harmony.

Los Caminos: Saturday, 21 May 2011

Dominic Paul Moore, Untitled, 2011, oil and acrylic on linen
David Johnson and Dominic Paul Moore

May 21 – June 25, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 21, 7-10pm

On Saturday, May 21st, Los Caminos will present two solo exhibitions featuring new work by photographer David Johnson and painter Dominic Paul Moore. Johnson and Moore’s works are marked by an exploration of texture, depth, and color; however, each artist handles his medium with a distinct process and conceptual approach.

In his recent series, Your walls aren’t that white (part 2), David Johnson focuses his lens on Los Caminos. Since September 2010, Johnson has studied and documented changes in the apartment gallery through each new season and exhibition. Throughout this exhibition Johnson presents a variety of photographic approaches, exploring the ways in which the built environment retains traces of the past. On one of the main gallery walls, nine photographs laid out in a grid initially read as abstract colorfield images. However, upon closer examination they reveal the contours and light in the gallery, prompting viewers to more carefully consider their surroundings.

Dominic Paul Moore privileges the painting process over a distinct theme, investigating how pattern and repetition establish the internal structure of a work of art. For instance, in Untitled (2011) Moore first paints the reverse of a piece of linen, allowing the paint to seep through the fabric before painting a pattern on its frontside. The relationship between the layers of paint and pattern create a visual field that at once reveals and belies his artistic approach. Moore produces optic illusions that are not intended to deceive the viewer conceptually, but rather to draw increased attention to his materials and process.

Cosima von Bonin, Rockstars (Character Appropriation), 2003
Summer Exhibitions Open May 6
7-9 pm Public Opening Celebration
10 pm Afterparty

Conceptual artist Cosima von Bonin’s creative practice is distinguished by an exceptional interweaving of sculpture, installation, video, textiles, music, performance, and her own social network. Extensive biographical allusions and art-historical references, particularly to conceptual and minimalist artistic practices, abound in her work, but she also draws on a broad range of topics and fields, from fashion and popular culture, to theater and electronic music. Von Bonin’s choice of materials (fabric, stuffed animals), scale (often oversized), motifs (mushrooms, bull dogs, sea creatures, cartoon characters), and eclectic subject matter (luxury-based lifestyle branding, American pop culture, and sloth), each carry with them personal associations, yet they also bear larger socio-cultural connotations, such as the ubiquity of consumerism, gender inequality, and increased social apathy or malaise.
