May 21 – June 25, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 21, 7-10pm

On Saturday, May 21st, Los Caminos will present two solo exhibitions featuring new work by photographer David Johnson and painter Dominic Paul Moore. Johnson and Moore’s works are marked by an exploration of texture, depth, and color; however, each artist handles his medium with a distinct process and conceptual approach.

In his recent series, Your walls aren’t that white (part 2), David Johnson focuses his lens on Los Caminos. Since September 2010, Johnson has studied and documented changes in the apartment gallery through each new season and exhibition. Throughout this exhibition Johnson presents a variety of photographic approaches, exploring the ways in which the built environment retains traces of the past. On one of the main gallery walls, nine photographs laid out in a grid initially read as abstract colorfield images. However, upon closer examination they reveal the contours and light in the gallery, prompting viewers to more carefully consider their surroundings.

Dominic Paul Moore privileges the painting process over a distinct theme, investigating how pattern and repetition establish the internal structure of a work of art. For instance, in Untitled (2011) Moore first paints the reverse of a piece of linen, allowing the paint to seep through the fabric before painting a pattern on its frontside. The relationship between the layers of paint and pattern create a visual field that at once reveals and belies his artistic approach. Moore produces optic illusions that are not intended to deceive the viewer conceptually, but rather to draw increased attention to his materials and process.
