Home Life in Far Away Lands
new work from Jon Cournoyer

This Friday at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary
Opening reception from 6pm-10pm
Open to the public and refreshments provided

"Jon Cournoyer layers beautiful images that recall the happiness of childhood days, but that are also tinged with the dread menace of childhood nights. His materials are old picture books, aspirational novels for girls, treasuries of verse and his own arcane sense of balance. For his new exhibition, Home Life in Far Away Lands, the familiar angelic young ladies and golden seals are once again set against their stately text fields, but there's something new -- images of the night sky are a recurrent feature. Are these constellations the far away lands of the show's title? That's the true beauty of Cournoyer's work; there's always a narrative for you to unravel and make each piece your own. These are storybooks written in image, half-remembered adventures made manifest.

The show remains up through November 25, and the gallery is open Friday and
Saturday (and by appointment).

The Progress of Love
On view November 16, 2012 - April 20, 2013

Opening Reception Friday, November 16, 5-9 pm Complimentary wine.

The Progress of Love is an unprecedented, transatlantic collaboration between The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis, The Menil Collection in Houston, and the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos, Nigeria, that explores the universal emotion of love. The three concurrent but unique exhibitions that make up The Progress of Love constitute a narrative arc, addressing love as an ideal, love as a lived experience, and love as something lost. The Progress of Love exhibition at the Pulitzer specifically explores the end of love and its aftermath through works by the British-Nigerian artists Zina Saro-Wiwa and Yinka Shonibare, MBE, the French artist Sophie Calle, and the American-Jamaican-Nigerian artist Temitayo Ogunbiyi. With inclusion of both African and Western art, the exhibition invites visitors to examine their own ideas about love and its loss. Read more.

Open Hours: Wednesday, noon - 5 pm, Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm, Admission is free.

Benedict J. Fernandez:
A Life's Work in Photography

Benedict J. Fernandez
Pro-Vietnam war demonstration, 1970

26 October - 21 November 2012

Opening Reception Friday, 26 October, 5-7 pm

With a conversation with Mr. Fernandez via teleconference on Friday, 26 October, at 3 pm in Sverdrup 101

The Wall Street journal wrote of this exhibition (which is currently also on view at the Robert Anderson Gallery in New York City), "(This is) a sampling of work from Benedict J. Fernandez's long career in photojournalism. Mr. Fernandez (b. 1936) does not belong to a photo agency and does not shoot on assignment. He self-selects his projects and, since he is not working against a deadline, works on them until he is satisfied; as a consequence, his pictures frequently have an art photography quality. Unlike much photojournalism that simply records an event, Mr. Fernandez creates images that distill its essence.

"The top half of "Wall Street, New York City" (1970) is dominated by a fluttering American flag, but the scene beneath Old Glory is one of strenuous conflict as hard-hat construction workers battle police during a demonstration in support of U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam. The flag is backlit and light glances off the police helmets and the demonstrators' hard hats, charging the image with vitality. Mr. Fernandez shot both pro- and antiwar demonstrations, as well as actions in favor of, and against, the civil-rights movement." (22 Sept 2012, p. A-20)

ISOLATION ROOM / GALLERY KIT: Friday, 2 November 2012

Kim Seymour: Bodyswap

November 2 - December 6, 2012
Opening Reception with the artist: Friday, November 2, 6pm-8pm

Bodyswap is a story, an archive, a performance, an artwork. What you are looking at in the Isolation Room is something quite extraordinary – an allegorical  but simultaneously real and authentic account of the meeting of two similar, very different women in the famous city of Oxford. One of the two women is the artist: young, pretty, vivacious, ambitious, compassionate. The other is a prostitute: young, pretty, damaged, and derailed by drugs – yet also retaining, against the odds, a degree of compassion. Bodyswap results from an unlikely and hard-won empathetic encounter between the two. Vividly aware of the Biblical resonances underpinning her practice, Kim Seymour entered into a difficult exchange: the prostitute used the artist’s lipstick to scrawl her feelings about plying her trade in the sordid underbelly of the City of Dreaming Spires, writing directly onto the artist’s skin. In an act of surrogate redemption, the artist then laboriously removes the lipstick, smudge by smudge. In a literal and a metaphorical sense, she takes on and then purges her skin of these traces, these stained thoughts and painful memories. It is the act of this exchange that constitutes the artwork and now you, the viewer, are embarking on another exchange here in this room, giving some of your time and attention to contemplate what might otherwise go unnoticed, hidden in the shadows. In return, Kim Seymour, and her collaborator, give you their bravery, their insight and their compassion. Bodywap warrants and rewards your attention.

Bryan Walsh: Syntax Error

Friday, November 9 - Saturday, December 1, 2012
Opening Reception Friday, November 9, 2012 7 - 11pm
Closing Reception Saturday, December 1, 2012 6 - 8pm

Bryan Walsh works in geometric abstraction. For Syntax Error, he created new paintings on found metal including flat panels and three-dimensional objects. Here, he spins the exhibition title’s meaning to refer instead to interpersonal and intrapersonal communication, both verbal and non-verbal. His work explores the relationships and colors of shapes and forms which exist within the same space: communicating, reacting, complementing or contrasting.

Somewhere between deliberately and unintentionally, Walsh amassed a collection of panels (many shelves in their former lives), assorted containers and metal detritus. This collection of objects on which he painted is as much a part of his creative process as the act of painting itself. Given the current market value for some metals, he also finds that even being able to collect so many metal objects is significant. The value of the work – both as unadorned scrap and as a transformed collection of art examining communication – is also a component of Syntax Error.

Genetic Building Block Series - Grey Segment, 2012
Jiyong Lee
Opening Friday, October 19th
Reception from 5:00 - 8:00 PM

Jiyong Lee’s “Segmentation Series” is inspired by his fascination with cell division and the journey of evolution that starts from a single cell and multiplies a million times over to become a life.  Lee works with glass that has transparency and translucency; two qualities that perfectly portray the metaphorical clarity and mystery of life sciences and, through these shapes and forms, serves as a representation of cells that symbolize the building blocks and start of life.

The artist explores geometrically created internal and external forms that become the metaphor for genes and cells through their complex composition.  This “Genetic Building Block Series” expands the inquiry through a variety of puzzle-like blocks of shapes, colors and composition suggesting the unlimited variations within life structures.

The uniquely refined translucent glass surface accentuates the mysterious qualities of cells and, on a larger scale, the cloudiness of our futures.  Jiyong Lee’s “Segmentation Series” is quiet, yet powerful, seductive, yet elegantly formal.  While working with a solid material such as glass through cutting, lamination, carving and refining the surface, the artist seems to magically create work that is both beautiful and deeply invested with meaning.

Nancy Newman Rice

Euclidian geometry as the skeleton of the empirical experience is nothing new, Poussin and Cezanne both seized upon this method of pictorial organization through subtle designs and simplified spatial effects. My Reflection series were compilations of geometric patterns that the winter sun produced as it filtered through horizontal blinds on a blank wall, thus defining spatial limits. Defining space with a geometric skeleton produced rectangular grid work of scaffolding which then described the interior architecture of sacred spaces in cathedrals, churches, and mosques. As I worked, the buildings eventually disappeared as if erased by time, leaving geometry as a sacred artifact.

How to Build a World That Won't Fall Apart: A solo exhibition by US English
Opening reception: Friday, October 19th from 7-10pm
On view October 19th - November 10th, 2012
*At temporary gallery space at 2644 Cherokee Street

“For me, the fundamental question is to explore the possibility of maintaining spaces of play. To discover how to produce forms for the presentation of objects, forms for the organizations of spaces, that thwart expectations. The main enemy of artistic creativity as well as of political creativity is consensus that is, inscription within given roles, possibilities, and competences.” –Jacques Ranciere

How to Build a World That Won’t Fall Apart, part 1 is a solo exhibition exploring labor as it relates to institutions, featuring the work of The Luminary founders Brea and James McAnally under their collaborative artistic identity US English. The exhibition was conceived in response to the ‘operaist’ worker movements of the 1970’s that posited the worker at the center of historical struggle, prefiguring successive transformations of economies, institutions, and forms of being. How to Build… takes place in a transitional moment for the organization and provides a space for introspection and experimentation, teasing out the collective identity of the institution through the work of its founders.

The exhibition initiates a season-long exploration into how artists and alternative arts organizations sustain themselves in times of social and economic uncertainty, with a particular emphasis on projects that have developed in relation to the current economic recession. The series will move successively outwards, from the individuals within an institution to global experiments in artist-led practice.

How to Build… will remain on view Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 12-6PM and Thursdays from 11AM-6PM through November 10th, 2012.

“Light from the Window,” a collection of photographs and related ceramic vessels by Susan Zimmerman, will be on display in the Bonsack Gallery from October 26 through November 27.

In this new and ongoing body of work, Zimmerman explores the relationship between two contrasting media, drawing inspiration from a series of free-form, hand-built vessels — both smoked-fired and porcelain white. She uses photography to capture the interplay between clay and sunlight filtered through the windows of her home. “My clay ‘muses’ became a conduit to a new way of seeing the light from the window,” she says.

All are invited to a reception hosted by the artist from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, on Friday, October 26. Regular gallery hours are 8 am to 6:30 pm, weekdays. The exhibit is free to the public.

Asma Kazmi: Playing Gender
October 11-December 1, 2012
A reception for the artist will be held October 11 from 5:30 PM and continuing to 7:30 PM.  Ms. Kazmi will give a slide talk in the gallery auditorium starting at 6:15 PM.

Asma Kazmi¹s Playing Gender engages a subaltern section of modern Indian society‹cross-dressed biological men, eunuchs, or hermaphrodites, who are known traditionally as hijras. The hijras exist on the fringes of the Indian society, tolerated only in the specific roles of beggars, ritual performers, or homosexual prostitutes. They can be seen in drag, gathered for marriages and birth celebrations, singing and dancing to drums and claps, to songs from the latest popular films.

Kazmi spent the summer of 2009 working with three hijras in New Delhi, learning the conventions of gender parody. The culmination of her interactions with the hijras resulted in a performance in which the hijras had the sole agency for constructing scenarios that included both the artist and the hijras. This performance is captured on video and featured in the exhibition. Through photography, installation, drawing and video Ms. Kazmi probes the notion that gender derives from culture and not nature.  As such, she sees its relationship to biological sex as a shifting, unstable space and not the firm ground it can seem to be.

Also on exhibit in Gallery B is UMSL Fine Art Faculty Jubilee and in Gallery C is Michael Gitlin¹s Dust Studies.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Phil Chang: Woman Laughing
October 5 - November 1, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, October 5, 2012, 6pm-8pm

Phil Chang has an archival issue. All photographic prints fade and the paper slowly cooks in the atmosphere: The ineluctable Fade to Black. His photographs literally vanish before your eyes. The more you see them the more they disappear as if they had never taken place at all. What does his work look like? We don’t really know. You’ll just have to see for yourself but here the act of seeing changes the subject and object. What words would it say about itself? The photograph might answer: “what I am I don’t know, I am the simulacra of myself.” But that would be as pretentious as a Jean Baudrillard pronouncement. Perhaps it might just refuse to play along and instead slowly continue becoming itself.

Hours: By appointment only

Juan William Chávez expands his project, Living Proposal: Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary 2010-2012, during the 2012 Kranzberg Exhibition Series, on view in both the indoor and outdoor galleries of Laumeier Sculpture Park. The outdoor exhibition features an outlined footprint of one of the buildings from the infamous Pruitt-Igoe complex created from used telephone poles. Inside Laumeier’s galleries, Chávez presents 17 works, including a lone jar of honey harvested from the Living Proposal site in North St. Louis, bee suits, videos and ephemera documenting this project to date, which explores and highlights creative initiatives to address public issues surrounding the land where the Pruitt-Igoe housing project once stood in St. Louis.
