Phil Chang: Woman Laughing

Phil Chang has an archival issue. All photographic prints fade and the paper slowly cooks in the atmosphere: The ineluctable Fade to Black. His photographs literally vanish before your eyes. The more you see them the more they disappear as if they had never taken place at all. What does his work look like? We don’t really know. You’ll just have to see for yourself but here the act of seeing changes the subject and object. What words would it say about itself? The photograph might answer: “what I am I don’t know, I am the simulacra of myself.” But that would be as pretentious as a Jean Baudrillard pronouncement. Perhaps it might just refuse to play along and instead slowly continue becoming itself.
