Heather Patterson: Deconstruct
November 30 - December 29
Opening Reception Friday, November 30, 6-10 PM

Heather Patterson's work intuitively gathers imagery from both the natural and built environments. She recreates geographic patterns and forms, layering them to invent new series of systemic landscapes. Analyzing the biological and structural phenomena, she finds similarities between their elements. For example: The way a topographical map echoes wood grain, how gnarled tree branches are reminiscent of the intertwining veins in a human body, and how computer generated charts can resemble mutating microscopic cells. Her work reveals an interest in how the imperfections and randomness of nature starkly contrast with calculated man-made environments. Patterson layers a variety of imagery into her work through drawing and painting, using a variety of media to create multi-sensory experiences. This interaction of the materials becomes an integral part of her process. She allows the contrasting substances to mix randomly in areas while manipulating other areas by carving, dripping, melting, taping, or spraying the surface. This system of addition and reduction allows her to create imaginary substructures and magnify the unexpected.
