City Museum: Friday, 25 January 2008

You are invited to the opening of the Elmslie and Sullivan exhibition on January 25, 6-9 pm at City Museum. It will be in the St. Louis Architectural Museum which is located in the SE corner of the 3rd floor in City Museum. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Tim Samuelson, Cultural Historian for the City of Chicago will speak at 7pm. Tim is a legend in urban preservation. His life is the subject of a 'This American Life' story.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Please mention that you are there to see the exhibit at the door.

The work in the exhibit is architectural ornament from Louis Sullivan, considered the father of modern architecture, and George Grant Elmslie, who was Sullivan's chief draftsman and later a important architect in his own right. Much of the exhibit's work is from three schools designed by Elmslie in Hammond, Indiana considered by many to have been some of the finest examples of late Chicago school architecture. Bruce Gerrie has brought together this collection and is acting as curator with help from architect Laura Johnson.

The legendary Johnny Rabbitt interviewed curator Bruce Gerrie and Michael Kilfoy this week to talk about the exhibit. The interview will broadcast Sunday at 8pm on WIL AM 1430 and at 6:30am on WIL FM 92.3, Movin' 101.1, and the Arch 106.5.

You can learn more about the exhibit at
www.citymuseum.org. We hope you can join us at the opening. It will be a wonderful evening.
