Rob Playter: Ten Memories in Every Pack

An interactive photography exhibition featuring images regarding friendship, social interaction, and the "rockstar aesthetic".

How does a camera affect the demeanor of the people on which it is focused? If removed from a group situation, how would a singular close friend interact with a white room, a camera, and me? These are just a few of the questions Mr. Playter posed while creating the work for his exhibition.

Opening Thursday, July 5th from 7-10 pm, and will be on view from July 5th-August 2nd, 2007.

Gallery hours are by appointment only, please call (618) 334-4347 or e-mail us for an appointment.

Maps is located at 225 N. Illinois St. in Downtown Belleville, Illinois, just a few blocks North of the Belleville Town Square.

PSTL Window Gallery: Friday, 29 June

Opening Friday, June 29th at PSTL Window Gallery

Please join us from 6pm-8pm on Friday, June 29 for the opening reception of recent work by Michael Roulade.

Michael Roulade is a St. louis native. Often leading a nomadic lifestyle in search of life's truths and finding even those unbelievable, he currently resides in Cleveland where he practices his talents in the visual and musical arts. Michael’s collage based installation depicts an identity crisis that is often insight, mistaken for struggle and confusion.

PSTL is an effort to grant exposure to innovative artists who do not have an established presence in the St. Louis art community. Our intimate space challenges them to respond with unique pieces that may be overlooked in a more mainstream gallery setting. The artists are free and encouraged to create whatever they wish, expressing themselves however they choose.

Ken Konchel And Jeff Palmer: BODY / BUILDING

June 23—August 11

A challenging new show allows the viewer to compare the structural similarities of the human body with architectural formations. The show, BODY / BUILDING, features the work of Ken Konchel and Los Angeles photographer Jeff Palmer. The exhibit runs June 23, 2007 through August 11, 2007 with a grand opening reception on June 23, 7:30–11:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

According to the ancient Roman architect Vetruvius, the precise mathematical relationships that exist in the human body should be followed in architecture. BODY/BUILDING explores the correlation between human and architectural forms through an examination of the male nude photography of Jeff Palmer and the architectural abstracts of Ken Konchel. phd gallery hosts the exhibition of black and white photography and will hang 22 large format works by each artist.

Professor Carl Safe, of Washington University's Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts contends that the work of these two artists is designed to intentionally encourage us to see in ways that we are not used to seeing. They challenge us to more clearly understand who we are and what we value. In the process we will be required to reassess our own sensibilities. Like many artful endeavors, their work can be provocative and for some, may even offend. (Read Professor Safe's essay.)

Ellen Curlee Gallery: Friday, 15 June 2007

Foreign Language: Susan Aurinko, Carl Safe and Matt Siber at Ellen Curlee Gallery

The exhibition will run from June 15, 2007 to July 28, 2007, opening reception Friday, June 15, 2007 from 6-9 p.m.

In Foreign Language three artists with different sets of interests and visual language document life in cultures which are not their own; interpreting the visual language through the lens of their own ideas. Armed with a keen sense of observation, each artist travels previously unknown corners to witness and record daily life as it is reflected in the language of architecture, design, graffiti and advertising.

In her series, La Poesie des Affiches, Susan Aurinko explores the juxtaposition and layering of signage that mirror the culture of a country. She is intrigued by the overlapping of previous events and the prospect events yet to come, ultimately creating a layering of past, present and future in the life of a city. These cultural symbols are reframed into tight, graphic compositions highlighting texture and tonal value, yet their impact lays in the way the fragments of layered text and images still manage to communicate and reflect the concerns and issues of the moment.

Carl Safe, trained as an architect, captures people in fleeting moments that the rest of us might overlook. At first blush, his images appear to be about the expressions and gestures of unfamiliar people, yet it is the way he inserts the figure in the context of line, and shape that clearly reflects his interest in design and formal composition. His photographs ultimately illustrate the way architecture influences the culture of a city.

Matt Siber's photographs are a mordant, yet witty criticism of our increasingly globalized culture. In his Untitled Project series, Siber photographs familiar urban scenes but removes all the text from signs and advertisements. The textual elements are then placed on a second panel and paired next to the image robbed of its language. The absence of the printed word draws attention to the role of text in the modern landscape, but also emphasizes how in a world of prevailing symbols, logos and cultural signs, public voices communicate without using traditional forms of written language.

The gallery is located at 1308-A Washington Ave. in the Washington Ave Loft district. Hours are 11:00 am to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday - Saturday and 11:00 to 9:00 the first Friday of the month. Tel: (314) 241-1299.
