Pulitzer Arts Foundation: Friday, 29 July 2016

Opening Reception for Three Summer Exhibitions

Fri, Jul 29
6?9pm

The Pulitzer presents three exhibitions that reframe the objects and environments of everyday life. Exquisite Everyday: 18th-Century Decorative Arts Objects from the J. Paul Getty Museum presents works of decorative art from France and Italy, showcasing the period's achievements in domestic design. The Ordinary Must Not Be Dull: Claes Oldenburg?s Soft Sculptures is dedicated to a body of work in which Oldenburg playfully altered the material, form, and scale of commonplace items, overturning sculptural conventions. Architecture collective raumlaborberlin disassembles a structurally unsound St. Louis house, giving its salvaged elements new life inside the Pulitzer as an installation, raumlaborberlin: 4562 Enright Avenue, that explores the history, present, and future of urban dwellings.

Teen Museum Studies collaboration with artist Kelley Walker
at CAM August 5-December 31, 2016
The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) presents an unprecedented collaboration between St. Louis-area teens and acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Kelley Walker. Kelley Walker: Schema is on view August 5 through December 31, 2016, and is organized by the 2016 class of Teen Museum Studies, CAM?s career exploration program. Serving as an extension of the Museum?s upcoming comprehensive examination of Walker?s work?Direct Drive, which opens September 16?Schema presents examples from several of the artist?s most iconic series. Held each summer, Teen Museum Studies offers a select group of high school students the opportunity to learn from CAM staff members in all departments and culminates in the teens organizing an exhibition from start to finish.

Throughout his career, Kelley Walker has explored the manipulation and repurposing of images in order to destabilize issues of identity, race, class, sexuality, and politics.
For Schema, the walls of CAM?s Education Gallery are completely covered by digitally printed vinyl. Each wall features enlarged photographs of Civil Rights protests overlaid with scanned Crest and Aquafresh whitening toothpaste. The toothpaste overlay simultaneously draws our attention to areas of violence and alludes to the gestural brushstrokes and drips of the Abstract Expressionists. The scale of the reproductions envelopes the audience, making us feel part of the scene and situating us within a historic, yet ongoing, American narrative.

Framations: Friday, 15 July 2016

A new exhibit at Framations Custom Framing and Art Gallery offers something for those inspired by animals. This exhibit, entitled "All Things Wild", is an all media exhibit of work focusing on the animal kingdom. This includes everything from the teeny tiny to the great and mighty. The opening reception for this exhibit will be Friday, July 15 from 6-8pm. Framations also invites the public to vote for People's Choice in the "All Things Wild" exhibit when they visit. The voting continues through the full length of the exhibit, which ends on August 25.

On display for the same period will be the exhibit Spirit Song, a mother and daughter exhibit by Judith and Ginger Repke. This mother and daughter work with the creator individually and/or with each other when making art.  Judith encouraged her daughter Ginger to paint her visions and gave her oil paint, canvas and an easel for Christmas.  Ginger has taken her camera on mother-daughter vacations and to various other locations, some photographs provide Judith with inspiration.  Judith's finished work contains things God has put in without her knowledge and Ginger likes to find and comment on them.  Ginger seeks technical advice and comments on her work from Judith for guidance and growth. Both delight in this creative collaboration. This exhibit will also open on July 15 and continue through August 25. Samples of their work can be found on www.framations.com.

AUGUST 18 - SEPTEMBER 4

Erica Popp "Family Heirlooms" - Photography & Ceramics

Opening Night: Friday, August 19, 6pm - 10pm
POPP.jpg
Join us for Erica Popp's MFA Exhibit titled, Family Heirlooms. This exhibit lovingly, captures the gentler side of life and history surrounding American family values. Erica has infused ceramics and photography into a storytelling capsule. Pointing focus onto her own ancestors and the life of an immigrant family.
"The work is an exploration of my family tree and stories of my ancestors. I've been preserving family photographs by scanning and digital restoration. I'm using these to create both hand-printed reproductions of the photographs for precious hand-bound albums, and for the ceramic plates, my attempt to create the family heirloom pieces that my family never had to pass down. My great-grandparents came here from Germany and Norway to own land and make a better life for themselves and their children in America. They didn't come with much, and as immigrant farmers, they never accumulated the type of wealth that enabled some American families to purchase precious objects to pass down to future generations, such as jewelry or fine china. These objects are something I can pass down to any future children or to my nephew. They tell the story of one branch of our family coming to America and fulfilling the American dream."
"The other portion of the show is my rural landscapes. For this MFA thesis show they are hand-printed photographs in cyanotype and van dyke brown. Historic processes honor the history of American immigrant farmers like my family. I feel a deep nostalgia for farm life despite growing up in the suburbs. I think part of our family history stays with us no matter how different our contemporary lives are."

Stephen Ingraham's first solo exhibition at SOHA Gallery will feature sculptural works made with organic materials found in nature. His work is elegant & minimal yet, each piece has its own, mighty presence.
He describes: "Holding the piece of weathered wood in my hand, thinking about all that it's been through, what sort of tree, how old was it, what has it seen, how did it get to be in my hand. Appreciating the subtle grays, & tans that come from being out in the sun. likening the cracks & textures to what we as people accumulate over our years. Enjoying the privilege of being able to work with this humble or simple, yet powerful, & complex material."
