Schmidt Art Center: Thursday, 28 August 2008

RECEPTION Thursday, August 28, 6 - 8 p.m.
This exhibition continues through October 4.

New paintings by Charles Schwall continue his explorations of human anatomy and biological function. Through careful buildup of oil on canvas, vellum, and linen, Schwall creates individual biosystems that achieve and maintain homeostasis--perfect equilibriums of color and form.

View Schwall's "Efflorescence" and "With Hold, With Out" series in the Marsh Gallery with new works by Edwardsville artist Jason Urban. Invoking pop culture with hints of nostalgia, Urban's "Bearded" paintings are literally optical illusions depicting Chewbacca, Teen Wolf, Chuck Norris, and other hairy icons. To achieve visual distortion, Urban amplifies images through Moire patterns, stripes, and modular units with dizzying precision.

The William and Florence Schmidt Art Center is located on the Belleville Campus of Southwestern Illinois College. Exhibitions and events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. HOURS Tuesday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Closed Sunday, Monday, and school holidays. Call 618-222-5278 for more information.

Sandi Shapiro & Jeff Krolick: Organic/Inorganic Lines

The current exhibit ORGANIC/INORGANIC LINES is a combined exhibition of work by Sandi Shapiro and Jeff Krolick that explores the use of line found in nature and from man made wire. Sandi Shapiro says, "I have always been fascinated and interested with these colorful wires…I see my work pushing the material in new directions…They are always loosely preplanned but never resolve into my original idea…Some of my sculptures have worlds inside their forms." In talking about the series of photographs, Jeff Krolick stated, "These images are not landscapes in the traditional sense but rather, appropriations of the seasonal textures, colors and shapes form a unique locale – Emigrant Lake, Oregon. By squaring these elements within the camera frame, an order is highlighted which weds the local gestalt of a small niche of the landscape with the photographer's search for a familiar compositional order or in rare instances his discovery of a previously unrecognized or unappreciated natural order."

August 29 – September 19, 2008
Hours: Monday - Friday 10am – 4pm or by appointment.

Opening Reception: Friday, August 29, 2008 – 6pm-9pm

The Cecille R. Hunt Gallery is pleased to present For Educational Use Only. The gallery will host an interactive learning environment to view the film and video works by well-known modern and contemporary artists collected to date by Webster University's Art Department library. The works will be displayed as part of an exploratory teaching method for the taught Art Forum class as part of the art department's curriculum and are adapted to create a new, temporary learning environment. As a direct response to traditional higher education teaching methods, For Educational Use Only will provide a learning and resource center for the collected works along with related books, videos, websites and other media. Designed as an improvised classroom, the gallery will be utilized for these multimedia artworks in order to integrate and share these instructional resources and to provide a conceptual framework that allows flexibility in both teaching and learning.

This multimedia project has been created as part of an organized learning activity and to provide a setting for research of modern and contemporary film and video through a series of weekly non-traditional instructional activities and viewing programs.

Materials are included under the fair use exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law and have been prepared according to the educational multimedia fair use guidelines and are restricted from further use.

New Glass" by Jon Biscan. In this first showing of his work, he explores a variety of techniques in glass pieces gracefully crumpled as well as traditional vessels. Biscan's work uses color thoughtfully swirled, layered, or gold and silver-leafed to add texture and visual interest.

Also on view...

"Three Degrees of Spiral" by Gen Obata. Obata explores spiral shapes through a series of drawings, paintings, and quilts. The simplicity of the spiral shape gives way to a more complex surface of pattern and texture. Series of works include: large mixed media works on paper with ink, colored pencils and graphite; spiral shapes in artist quilts; and small mixed media drawings in inks and colored pencil marks with occasional pen plotter.

Marbles Yoga Studio and Gallery: Saturday, 9 august 2008

Ken Howard, Lois Lutes, and Susan Oviatt exhibit stitched paper and fiber works at Marbles Gallery in Lafayette Square, August 4th – September 14th.
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 9 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Free and open to the public. Wine and light refreshments.

Each artist exhibits favorite works representing highly varied styles. Susan Oviatt presents a meditative painterly approach to piecing with stitched color washed paper in geometric shapes derived from quilt patterns, tile pavements and abstract sources. Ken Howard exhibits recent abstract fabric art using a "discharge" technique that takes color away from a canvas of natural fiber cloth – showing us "what is not seen with the eye, but rather with intuition and intention." Lois Lutes transitioned from painting over the years to combining art with her love for crocheting. She portrays images of grandchildren, elderly relatives and flowers from her gardens using yarns and threads.
