Great Rivers Biennial 2008 Opening Night

Be among the first to visit our new exhibition! Bring your friends and family and join us for a celebration marking the opening of the Great Rivers Biennial 2008, an exhibition designed to celebrate emerging artistic talent and to strengthen the local art scene in St. Louis. The Great Rivers Biennial program is generously funded by the Gateway Foundation.
Admission to the Great Rivers Biennial Opening Night is free.
The Front Room
February 1, 2008 is also opening night for the Front Room. The Front Room is a new project space in the Contemporary's lobby designed to offer reactive, nimble, and experimental exhibitions.
In conjunction with the Great Rivers Biennial, the Front Room will feature projects by White Flag Projects; Snowflake/Citystock; Evil Prints, in collaboration with Outlaw Printmakers; Boots Contemporary Art Space; Maps Contemporary Arts Space; local independent curator Dana Turkovic; and local record shop Apop. The schedule of events is subject to change; please refer to the Contemporary's website for regular updates. This season of the Front Room is curated by Assistant Curator Laura Fried.
The first project, White Flag Projects Presents P.G.S. ("Provincial Gallery Simulator") opens alongside the Great Rivers Biennial 2008 on February 1 and lasts until February 17, 2008.
As the inaugural occupant, White Flag Projects will stage an ersatz commercial gallery within the Front Room walls, offering as its only service "abuse"-specifically, a slap in the face. Patrons are placed in front of the painting and are photographed as a "gallery girl" slaps them. "Gallery goers" may be slapped free of charge, while "collectors" may pay to have a print made as a souvenir of the assault. "Serious collectors" may attempt to negotiate discounts for large purchases of multiple slaps.
