SLCC Forest Park Gallery of Contemporary Art: Friday 29 February 2008

Sean Frye, one of two African American faculty members in the art department at St Louis Community College at Forest Park, will be having a solo exhibit at the Gallery of Contemporary Art at Forest Park entitled “Strange Adventures.”

Sean Frye writes, "My current body of work is a hybrid of both, fine art and graphic illustration. The subject matter varies, but for the most part, the content is pulled from different social, political and personal oddities. I began the “Guilty Pleasures” series to focus on the ideal views of women through the eyes of men - fantasy vs. reality. For example, men are seeking the perfect woman represented in The 3 Graces, which are the wife, the warrior, and the whore. By Contrast, my “Adventures in Reality” series focuses on current events with a graphic illustrative twist. Still Smokin’ Nuns represents the clash of religious and secular views and is a metaphor of the restrictions faced by the clergy placing them on a pedestal of piety above the “lowly” sinners, when in fact they are behaving unsaintly."

The exhibition runs from Feb 11 through March 7, with an artist reception occurring on Friday, Feb 29 from 6-8pm. The Gallery of Contemporary Art is located in the Library Building of the Forest Park Campus, 5600 Oakland.
