The Ellen Curlee Gallery is delighted to announce its Next Door Video Series. Viewed from the street through the window next door to the gallery space, the series will showcase video work by local, national and international artists 24 hours a day. The videos will change every two weeks. By showing video art in such a public manner the gallery aims to heighten public interest in video work and hopes to instigate a dialogue about the individual works as well as the medium in general.
St. Louis artist Jessika Miekeley will kick off our series on Friday August 3 with her video Airport, 2001. Airport will be shown in conjunction with our one night "Lit Room" event, "Who Watches the Watchers?" which will explore art using surveillance, exhibitionism and voyeurism. Tying nicely into the theme of the event, Miekeley uses her own camera to glide over a still photograph from an airport surveillance camera in a manner similar to that of the original; thus creating a psychologically threatening scenario full of tension and suspense.
Opening Reception: Friday, August 3, 7-11pm
The Ellen Curlee Gallery is located at 1308-A Washington Avenue in the Washington Avenue loft district. Hours are 11am to 4pm Tuesday-Saturday and 11am to 9pm on First Fridays, the first Friday of each month. Tel: (314) 241-1299.
