Mad Art: Friday, 3 August 2007

Mad Art Gallery proudly presents "Flight Risk" works by LJ Lindhurst, Tim Meehan, and Jen Weigel. This exhibit will be showing from August 3 to August 30 with a free opening reception on Friday, August 3, 2007, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Cash bar available.

LJ Lindhurst's paintings, The Lock Series, explore the nuances of metal, reflection, sunlight, rust, peeling paint, and general decay in stark detail. The padlock itself is fetishized - its colorful stripes of reflection or mottled surface are painted in extraordinary detail.

Here is how Tim describes his paintings in this show, "Good memories of my childhood are major influences on my work. Many are based on camping trips with my Dad. The beauty of nature the calm, the fresh air, the quiet and the feeling of being safe. We did a lot of spelunking in the caves of Missouri. I always enjoyed the hidden world. My textures of the backgrounds are built from this memory. A snapshot of the ever changing living walls of caves. Moving my flashlight to a different angle could create a completely different landscape. Working in fresco in this wet on wet process. I use a lot of elbow grease, adding and subtracting colors and textures. The foreground subjects of birds. The outside world. The most recognizable element. The silhouette shape often becomes just the negative space of the more dynamic background. The final addition of the Resin, reminds me that cave walls are always wet. These are my landscapes."

Jennifer Weigel will be creating a one-night performance piece entitled Sustenance in conjunction with the opening reception of Flight Risk. This piece is the second in a series of performance pieces exploring the nature of the art opening as an event. Jennifer
