Des Lee Gallery: Friday, 20 July 2007
Wrestling With The Black Box.
Opening reception Friday July 20 from 6 to 9pm.
"Emerging painters Jonathan Muehlke and Jonathan Lisenby exhibit new paintings that tackle the elusive, and yet, impenetrably romantic "black box" surrounding the tradition of painting.
Jonathan Muehlke's work addresses racial identity as a Chinese-American. His paintings investigate the relationship between Chinese calligraphy, oil, and graffiti spray paint. Muehlke's bold and frenetic marks demonstrate a powerful connection between an artist and his material, resulting in sensual canvasses.
Jonathan Lisenby creates iconic images derived from modern depictions of spirituality and magic. His work references Japanese animation, American-styled advertising, and children's books which can be seen in these larger than life images. Lisenby's paintings explore a pared-down pop/comic book aesthetic.
Sat. & Sun. 11-5pm, July 20 to August 24
