LISA K. BLATT: New Work
January 16 – February 21, 2015
Opening Reception:Friday, January 16, 2015 from 6 to 9 pm
Bruno David is pleased to present a new exhibition by Lisa K. Blatt. Ms. Blatt’s new work continues her exploration of perception and the intersection between nature and culture. Blatt states “Landscapes attract me with their light, beauty, simplicity. I stay for their darkness, complexity, and secrets. My work examines how landscape may be defined by what is not visible, what is memory or what is trace.” This show marks Blatt’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. In conjunction with the exhibition, Bruno David Gallery Publications will publish a catalog on the artist’s work with an exhibition history and bibliography. Lisa K. Blatt works in extreme landscapes, including deserts like Antarctica. Cindy Sherman chose and wrote about Blatt, when asked which one artist Sherman thought was doing groundbreaking work (Smithsonian Magazine, March 2012).

Bonsack Gallery: Friday, 9 January 2015
"The Power of Words," cut paper monoprint, 22.5 X 30.25 inches, 2013
The Bonsack Gallery at John Burroughs School will feature works by printmaker Bunny Burson
from January 9 through February 11. All are invited to an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30
pm, Friday, January 9.
This body of work is based on a collection of letters recently discovered in the attic of Burson’s
family home. Her grandparents wrote the letters to her mother from 1939 to 1941, as they tried to
escape first from Germany and then Latvia after sending their children to America.
Burson says, “I have uncovered and recovered a lost generation, whose ruptured lives are linked
to mine.” In these works, Burson exposes the layers of the print to discover what is not evident
on the surface, and she incorporates icons (keyholes, shoes, chessboards and maps) to provide
insight into her family’s story. “Perhaps the most important discovery was the life and beauty in
the writing itself. In repeatedly drawing and printing their lines of script, my hand became one
with theirs. Their handwriting became my art.”
“Hopefully these works transcend my own journey,” Burson continues. “Through the visual
processing of my grandparents’ letters, I seek to move from the personal to the universal and to
stir the desire we all have to discover who we are through those who came before us.”
Regular gallery hours are 8 am to 5 pm, weekdays.

December 12 & 13, 2014
Opening reception: Friday, December 12, 2014 from 6-9p.
Additional hours for this exhibition will be Saturday, December 13 from 1-6p.
The Des Lee Gallery is pleased to announce the BFA exhibition Living Room Deities by Anya Kavanaugh, a December 2014 graduate.
A purely aesthetic object is intended to be gazed upon and contemplated. During such contemplation, a painting's self-awareness can create a contractual understanding between the viewer and the object about one's place outside the other, both physically and metaphysically. The human mind's remarkable ability to displace itself from the body's finiteness can enable a complete immersion into the opposing world. When gazing upon a work, the mind becomes a pawn on the chess board that is the object on the wall. Once the object has achieved checkmate over the viewer, the two work together to engage in a dialogue about the consistency of the human condition and its experience of beauty. The expressionistic style throughout my oil paintings, drawings, gifs, videos, photographs, and collages heightens the presence of my hand as the artist; however, the lack of an inscribed signature allows the work to exist within its own mythology outside of myself in order to speak of universal truths of the human condition. The everyday and the extraordinary fuse as fashion models are thrown into domestic environments and the viewer is thrown into mythology.
