Artist Receptions for Eric Hoefer's "Architectonic" & Matthew Johnson's "Cities and Networks"
"Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else." Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities
Reese Gallery presents Eric Hoefer's solo show "Architectonic" and Matthew Johnson's exhibit "Cities and Networks." At Reese Gallery, two artists explore the scale and scope of imagined architectures and invented cities.
In Gallery 1, Eric Hoefer investigates the science of structure and the anatomy of architecture in his solo show "Architectonic." Almost toy-like, his ceramic sculptures and (quasi) vessel forms are reminiscent of towers, balconies, spires, balustrades, terraces, bridges...colliding into compound architectural forms.
In Gallery 2, we present Matthew Johnson's exhibit, "Cities and Networks."Deeply inspired by Italo Calvino's book "Invisible Cities," Matthew's work is a reflection of those invented scenes, strange, chaotic, serene, and unexpected, but very real.Working through drawings and sculptures, his work speaks to the intersection of artificial and built environments.
