Duane Reed Gallery: Friday, 22 March 2013
Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of artist Jay Musler. Exhibition opens Friday, March 22nd with a reception that evening 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through April 20th.
An innovative force in the glass arts for over four decades, Jay Musler has an unusual and eccentric style. His large wall pieces are composed of cut and assembled glass, the surfaces of which are saturated with oil paint of his personally inspired color palette. The structures create latticed patterns with hidden flameworked objects, alluding to a found artifact of unknown place or origin. He works with subtly cartoonish shape and uses repetition and juxtaposition to construct objects that both alure and unsettle the viewer. Rather than reflect light, Musler’s glasswork seems to unexpectedly absorb the ambiance. The final effect is one of “extraordinary whimsy and fantasy….a mixture of consummate elegance and exquisite craftsmanship, and they show a changeling imagination of the most fertile and transformative sort” (Urban Glass Quarterly).
