Susan Taylor Glasgow: The Communal Nest
July 20, 2011 – August 26, 2012 / Opening Reception: Friday, July 20, 6 – 8pm
Susan Taylor Glasgow meticulously constructs her 10 foot wide nest from more than 500 hundred glass twigs interwoven with real branches. A solitary metal chair with a glass pillow rests in the center, and broken shards of glass cover the floor, creating what Glasgow terms a “barrier from reality.”
Glasgow’s early career as a seamstress has come full circle to influence her artwork technically and conceptually. Whereas she once stitched with fabric and thread, Glasgow now slumps, arranges, and sews glass with a technique that is all her own. “Armed with finely honed homemaking skills gone awry, my work exercises the motions and notions of the feminine ideal, but in a contrary material, offering conflicting messages of comfort and expectation,” explains Glasgow.
Paying homage to the feminine nesting instinct is only one aspect of The Communal Nest. During the initial creation of The Communal Nest at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Glasgow worked with a group of women from the Bethlehem Haven Women’s Shelter of Pittsburgh. They crushed up glass and cast glass twigs that were incorporated into the nest. Profoundly affected by meeting these women, who bore both the physical and emotional scars of their experiences, the nest has also come to symbolize friendship for Glasgow.
The exhibition will also include six sewn glass pieces that were inspired by Glasgow’s experiences with the women from the shelter.
Open Call for Twigs
