Marcel Dzama: Death Disco Dance

June 29- August 2, 2012
Opening Reception: Friday, June 29, 2012 6pm-8pm

At Isolation Room we see the off cuts from the film Chess Match who’s narrative arcs the following direction: An assassinated chess player slumps dead over the board, while a costumed dancer playing ‘white’ La Reina, looking more like a Philip Guston Klansman than a chess piece, stands astride the game-board-cum-dance-stage as a colossus, crushing one hapless black piece after another. Eventually an unnoticed feral black pawn steadily advances by sneakily ‘chivying’ and daintily pirouetting its way to the end of the board until it reincarnates as a queen to destroy La Reina, in a surprise reversal of power. This cutting room floor film is slightly different from the official ballet. However, it has the same slinky polka-dot leotard wearing ballet dancers bouncing around, almost like a “girls on trampolines” skit. What’s not to like? -DM

Be sure to check out Marcel Dzama's exhibition at the World Chess Hall of Fame before August 12!

Hours: By appointment only.
