Sara Paula Hoffman: The Nora Project

Opening reception, Friday, February 15, 5:30-8pm
Exhibition February 15 - March 7, 2008

Hoffman's psychologically-inspired oil paintings explore Midwestern girlhood and are influenced by the plays of the Norwegian Modernist, Henrik Ibsen. She creates visual theater on a two-dimensional stage in these paintings, drawings and works in progress, which are based on Ibsen's A Doll's House and Ghosts.

Ibsen's dramas investigate the roles of women caught in the web of Victorian expectations; Hoffman's work follows these threads into contemporary society. The play A Doll's House traces the awakening of Nora from a life of unexamined domestic comfort and male domination to her abandonment of marriage and three children, a choice which outraged audiences in 1879. Ibsen's Ghosts conversely portrays the tragedy of a woman who does not leave an oppressive domestic situation but whose 'security' ultimately extracts a much higher price than leaving would have.
