SLCC Forest Park: Friday 27 October 2006
You are cordially invited to the opening reception for the solo exhibition of “Chemical Dependents” by Sandra Marchewa Friday, October 27 at the Gallery of Contemporary Art at Forest Park. The exhibition runs from October 23 until November 10.
Chemical Dependents reveals the imaginary natural world of Sandra Marchewa. The exhibition presents a collection of small and medium objets d’art as well as paintings.
Whether in glossy landscapes or water worlds Marchewa creates creatures and plants that are hallucinogenic hybrids. Sometimes these snippets of Marchewa’s mind are dark and ominous; sometimes they are bright and gay. None are minimal. Marchewa’s worlds are always densely populated. She crafts numerous trees, flowers, and plants, rendering them more multi-colored and artificial than real life, and yet more distinctively animated. The scorpions, bees, and bats that float and fly through her work are painted with unnatural patterns and are adorned with beads and glitter, like toys for tots on Day of the Dead.
The reception will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Gallery of Contemporary Art. Refreshments will be served. The gallery, situated in the library building, is at the center of the Forest Park Campus. St. Louis Community College at Forest Park is located at 5600 Oakland.
You may contact the Art Department at 314-644-9350 for further details.
