As the first exhibition of contemporary Bulgarian art in the Midwest, Contemporary Icons: Recent Art from Bulgaria demonstrates the range of important and vibrant works being created by artists in (or from) Bulgaria. The Contemporary Icons exhibition is comprised of works in various media, installation, video, photography, painting, etc., and yet all suggest a highly engaged and provocative understanding of contemporary international neo-conceptual practices. While not specifically political in nature, many of the works are directly linked to the theme of a post-Communist Bulgaria and how images can symbolically critique or even subvert structures of power.
