Hoffman Lachance Contemporary: Friday, 6 May 2011
May 6th - May 28th 2011
Opening reception May 6th from 6pm - 10pm
Group show Curated by Michael Wille
Ruptures: Zachary Buchner - Melissa Oresky - Michael Perrone - Thomas Vance - Jeffrey Cortland Jones Linnea Paskow - Trew Schreifer - Michael Wille - Gianna Commito - Jared Sprecher - John Kissick -
Ruptures includes the paintings of eleven contemporary artists who each thinks progressively about painting and abstraction. As I see it, each artist invests in her/his own studio practice, making paintings that are similarly engaged in what the image is about in addition to how it visually participates in the contemporary dialogue of abstract painting. I have chosen painters whose works function as ruptures in the seams of contemporary abstraction. These paintings assert themselves based on their own value system, and force you to slow down and take notice. These paintings seek pathways to both engage in the large, complicated history of abstract painting but also fight to find one's own stance in relation to it. This exhibition boasts a vast range of work from the crudely drawn to the overtly composed, from the beautiful orchestration of color to the seemingly casual look of another.
