St. Louis Artists' Guild: Friday, 12 November 2010

“Nuts and Bolts” Exhibition Series
Opening Reception: Friday, November 12, 2010, 6–9 pm
Exhibition Dates: November 12, 2010–January 7, 2011
Gallery Hours: 12 pm to 4 pm; Tuesday through Sunday

What items do we collect, and why? How can we repurpose or reimagine the objects and materials we’ve accumulated? How do we gather and collect our dreams, memories, and experiences? How do all of these collections, both physical and immaterial, come together to form a personal visual language? These are the questions explored by the St. Louis Artists’ Guild’s new exhibition series, Nuts and Bolts. The Nuts and Bolts Exhibition Series consists of five art exhibits tied together by the idea and act of collecting.

All of This and Nothing
All of This and Nothing is an exhibition that highlights the objects in a collection that has defined the life of St. Louis community activist Galen Gondolfi (founder of Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts). Coordinated by Jessica Baran

Scenes Through the Heartland During Naptime (Solo Gallery)
Scenes Through the Heartland During Naptime is a solo exhibition by Rick Dunn. Dunn will create an installation that is composed of a series of individual objects, which are formally distinct, but designed to be viewed as whole. The installation will be informed by the paradoxes inherent in the global consumer culture in which we live.

Collective Reasoning
Collective Reasoning is a national juried exhibition featuring artwork made with recycled, reclaimed, and repurposed materials. Juried by John Watson.

Paintings From My Heart (Members’ Gallery)
Paintings From My Heart is a collection of new works by Barbara Johnson. Johnson says “I did my first painting in 1975 when I was coming out of a deep depression. I knew I was not well enough to drive and I decided I wanted to do a painting of my cat that died. I went to the garage and got a piece of plywood and some house paints and started on the painting; I call it ‘Cat on a Cushion.’”

Mooch (Children’s Gallery)
Mooch is a monkey. He’s eight inches tall and brown and white. For over ten years, Mooch has been an avid traveler. The preschool students of the Wilkinson Early Childhood Center in Dogtown take Mooch home with them on weekends. The children record their weekend adventures with Mooch through drawings and photographs. After the weekend, Mooch and his host student share their artwork and stories with the rest of the class. The St. Louis Artists’ Guild will be displaying Mooch’s collection of drawings, photographs and stories in its Children’s Gallery for art lovers of all ages to enjoy.
