Elements: The Art of Textile Collage
Barbara Simon, curator
September 11-October 25, 2009
FREE Opening Reception on Friday, September 11, 6-8pm
This exhibition is part of Innovations in Textiles 8, a city-wide collaborative event.
Simon has selected five artists who produce creative work using textile collage. The artists featured are Bob Adams, Luanne Rimel, Joan Schulze, Fran Skiles, and Barbara Lee Smith. “Each of these artists alter or enhance their fabrics and papers with surface design techniques using dye, paint, discharge, transfer, silkscreen and digital technology, and often embellishing the work with hand stitching and text,” says Simon. “The medium of collage offers artists the freedom to manipulate diverse elements and make changes until they perceive balance and have created a new and satisfying work.”
Opening concurrently in the Charak Gallery is Not All Together Whole, featuring the work of Pat Owoc. There is a strong element of storytelling in her work, which “deals with memory, both real and invented, and land, both real and imagined.” The stories told by Owoc’s impressionistic, dream-like landscapes will awaken memories in her viewers.
Gallery Hours: Tue-Thur, 10am-6pm; Fri & Sat 10am-6pm; Sun 11am-5pm, Closed on Monday.
