Craft Alliance Grand Center: Friday, 12 June 2009

Robert Longyear: A Revisionist’s Draft
Public Opening Reception - Friday, June 12, 6:00-9:00pm
June 5 – July 5, 2009

Robert Longyear creates jewelry in response to what he sees when he walks out his front door in Hyde Park, a North St. Louis neighborhood. “What I am seeing in my neighborhood is evidence of a collapsed system. My research is about working with entropy – taking apart a system and working toward disorder,” states Longyear about his current MFA Thesis project in the Grand Center gallery space.

In this installation, sculptural jewelry is combined with assemblages of building materials and large photographs of architectural sites, each referencing the other. Longyear says this about his new work: “By bringing pieces of the system and reassembling them I am trying to bring about awareness. I demonstrate that as the system breaks down, it reveals much about its impossibility. My experiences have been open-ended, complex, and suggest that fate is malleable.”
