Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery: Thursday, 12 February 2009

Point of View: Lewis Place

February 2 through March 1, 2009 at the Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery at Architecture St. Louis, 911 Washington Avenue, Suite 170. There will be a reception on Thursday February 12 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with remarks by Pamela Tally (President , Lewis Place Historic Preservation, Inc.) at 7:00 p.m.

Landmarks Association and Architecture St. Louis are proud to host Point-of-View: Lewis Place Historic Preservation Inc. Sponsored by the Public Policy Research Center at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, this photography exhibit documents the people and places of the oldest African American private street in St. Louis.

Each year, the Public Policy Research Center's Photography Project teaches volunteer community groups how to photograph the work they do to improve the quality of life in St. Louis. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Lewis Place is significant for its role in the reversal of restrictive real estate covenants in St. Louis and across the nation (as well as its stunning entrance gates, designed by Barnett, Haynes & Barnett in 1895, and its unique collection of Craftsman style bungalows).

The Gallery is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
