Craft Alliance Grand Center: Friday, 30 January 2009
Craft Alliance Presents An installation Exhibit by Jennifer Angus: Locusts & Honey
January 30 – May 17, 2009
Public Opening Reception - Friday, January 30, 6:00-9:00pm
Gallery Hours Wednesday–Saturday 12-6pm, Sunday 12-5pm, Monday–Tuesday Closed
Using exotic insects and pinning them to the walls and furniture, Angus creates patterns which mimic textiles and wallpaper. In her work Angus highlights the interplay between science and art; she confronts the viewer, playing on their discomfort with bugs. In Locusts & Honey, Angus alludes to culture, history and the environment by utilizing two natural elements that are linked together, insects and honey. The artist explains, “insects play an important role in the health of our environment from the decomposition of organic matter to the pollination of flowers, which in turn produce fruit.” Locusts and Honey maintains a tension between “the beauty one observes in the pattern and the apprehension we feel toward insects.” Using insects as art forces the viewer to examine their personal feelings towards bugs and reshapes their views of what constitutes an art medium. The installation of Locusts and Honey begins January 25 and continues until January 30. The public is encouraged to watch Jennifer and her team create large scale patterns using insects beginning Monday, January 26th through Friday, January 30th.
