The Katrina Diaries: An Exhibit by members of the Women's Caucus for Art
The widespread impact of Hurricane Katrina continues during the ongoing aftermath of this disaster. The St. Louis Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art is proud to announce an exhibit featuring artwork in response to the Katrina experience.
The Katrina Diaries includes work by members of the Louisiana Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art. These works travel throughout the country to Women's Caucus for Art chapters, where the chapter members create a second line of work in response. The artwork is then displayed together at the Katrina Diaries exhibit.
In addition to the exhibit, at the opening reception, the WCA will be working with Vivavox in a traditional New Orleans style "second line" parade. Vivavox provides art mentoring services to "at risk" youth in order to promote self discovery, positive personal growth, and to impact social change. The parade will include music, dancing, costumes, and colorfully decorated umbrellas made by both WCA members and Vivavox youth. The umbrellas will then be silent auctioned with the proceeds to benefit Vivavox programs.
This exhibit displays an emotional journey of strength, heartache, devastation, and determination. Through the artist's eye, experience the loss of humanity and the efforts to reestablish lives.
The exhibit will be on display at the Morton J. May Foundation Gallery at Maryville University from June 14th- August 3rd. The opening reception is on Thursday, June 14th from 6-8 pm. The Morton J. May Foundation Gallery is located at 650 Maryville University Dr, St. Louis, 63141. Gallery hours are Monday thru Thursday 7:30 am-10 pm, Friday and Saturday 8 am- 6 pm and Sundays 11 am-10 pm
