Sean Gyshen: Sewing The Façade
Sewing the Facade will open Thursday, June 7th from 7-10 pm, and will be on view from June 7th-July 1st, 2007. Gallery hours are by appointment only, please call (618) 334-4347 or e-mail us for an appointment.
My work achieves a cultural dialogue by celebrating the transgressive beauty of subversive gendered experiences. They range from literal physical depictions to external manifestations of the internal psychological state. In “Sewing The Façade” I created self-portraits in which I am depicting the physical and emotional aspects of my gender experience while calling attention to (the) effects of traditional ideas of gender. My work is constantly striving to visually articulate an idea and to challenge traditional ways of thinking. The responses to my work range from solidarity to contempt. The most important aspect of these interactions is not that the viewer agrees with what is being offered, but that a discourse is established.
