Philip Slein Gallery: Thursday, 18 October 2018

Philip Slein Gallery is pleased to present Blondie Bubba: New Paintings by Jamie Adams
Opening Reception:  Thursday, October 18th, 2018, 5 PM to 8 PM
Exhibition runs through Saturday, December 15th, 2018

Blondie Bubba is the name of Jamie Adams's new series of paintings, and also a reference to Jamie's father--both his father's youth (wavy blonde hair) and his old age (Bubba is what his grandchildren call him). Jamie effortlessly (it seems) depicts the past and present existing simultaneously. His classically rendered figures add to the effect. Likewise, his figures are frequently combinations of people, sometimes appearing androgynous as a result.

Identities merge in Jamie's art. His canvases are the screens upon which he projects dreams. It is only fitting, then, that some of his figures are film stars, and that he staged scenes from his own life in Jean Seberg's apartment in Breathless because, among other reasons, Jean Seberg bore a resemblance to his family.

In his new series of paintings, the figures do not seem to inhabit a real space, but seem posed in front of rear-screen projection. They are frequently floating, as if painted on the ceiling of a chapel or palace. In any event, his figures continue to include family, this time his father moves front and center in Jamie's dreams. As the old man nears the end of his life, his son remembers.
