Vashon through a Lens
Vashon High School student photography at UrbArts
Opening Reception, 6:00–8:00 pm, Friday, May 4
The exhibition runs from May 4 through May 27, 2018.
Vashon through a Lens, at UrbArts, this Friday, May 4. As part of the ongoing partnership between CAM and Vashon, Tiffany Sutton taught portrait photography to the students throughout their third quarter of instruction, beginning in January 2018. The work on view is the culmination of the students’ third quarter of art education through CAM.
Participating Vashon artists are Paige Wallace, Lewis Dickens, Kamia Williams, Tiona Robinson, Ryan Standley, Jamal Walters, Ahlaya Chavers, Daja Williams, Aubrey Logan, and Jessika Leatherberry.
Since August, 2017, CAM’s Learning and Engagement Department has partnered with Vashon, teaching two sophomore classes introductory art courses through project-based curricula. Vashon fits within CAM’s one-mile-radius initiative, in which staff and local artists work in neighboring schools. Under the leadership of Miriam Ruiz, CAM School and Community Programs Manager, and in coordination with Vashon teacher Tim Jennings, Vashon students have already exhibited their work at the Museum. For the final quarter at Vashon, Lizzy Martinez will instruct the students in mural art. CAM and Vashon High School have agreed to continue their partnership in 2018–19.
