St. Louis Creates: Works by Local Artists
Nov. 14 - Dec. 14

The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to host an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. for St. Louis Creates: Works by Local Artists. St. Louis Creates features art created by nine local artists, and covers a wide range of media and styles. Participating artists include:

Peter Manion, James Holzer, Luanne Rimel, Thomas Sleet, Mark Pappas, Brian D. SmithSarah Paulsen, Stephen Da Lay, Kenneth Worley

Each of them represents a cross section of accomplished local artists whose work is exhibited locally and internationally.

Thomas Sleet focuses on the process from a deconstructive perspective, while Peter Manion becomes deeply absorbed by its materiality. The work of Sarah Paulsen is informed by personal narrative, and employs a wide variety of media which is dictated by the subject matter. Brian D. Smith, an exuberant colorist, balances his paintings through composition. James Holzer investigates history from the perspective of cross-cultural commonalities of civilizations, which he describes as “a dance between the ancient and the current.” Mark Pappas reconciles ancient Greek mythology with obsessively Renaissance compositions, and expressionist mark-making. Luanne Rimel blends materials, technique and imagery that characterize the human spirit. Stephen Da Lay’s methodic approach to form and content moves off the surface and claims a place in space. Kenneth Worley’s facility in the formal aspect of image making renders him a virtuoso.
