Lisa Sanditz: Rotting Jack-O
October 11 - November 7, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, October 11, 6pm-8pm
Lisa Sanditz’s Rotting Jack-O, 2012, looks beyond the cliched seasonal motif because the painting has an inward looking feel. The smiley faces on the carved Jack-o-Lantern seem trapped there as if in a psychedelic lava lamp. The sense of a world quaking in ecstasy and calmed, on the verge of disintegration is palpable. The painting could descend into a slap stick example of “bad painting”, but this is a danger the painter courts, with multiple coats, a sedimentary layer of touches punctuated by their bursts of pigment, balanced by a soft “out of focus” effect and radioactive focal points. However fluid in its interpretation, the painting of this sliced up pumpkin won’t fall down on its face bored with its own existence.
By appointment only.
