Free Opening Reception    at the  NEW ART SAINT LOUIS GALLERY   Saturday night, August 17, 2013, 6-9 p.m. for our "Under The Influence" exhibition ______________________________________    Under The Influence      Art Saint Louis proudly presents "Under The Influence," on view in our NEW Gallery at 1223 Pine Street in the beautiful Park Pacific Building in downtown St. Louis. You are invited to join us for a free Opening Reception at Art Saint Louis this Saturday evening, August 17, from 6-9 p.m. We invite you to this special event to enjoy excellent artworks and to celebrate the 53 featured artists whose works are on view in this new juried exhibition. If you can't make the reception, the exhibit remains on view through Thursday, October 10 and is open 6 days a week with Gallery & Café hours Monday 7 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday 7 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday 7 a.m.-4 p.m. We are closed Sundays & holidays. ABOUT THE EXHIBIT "Under The Influence" is a multi-media juried exhibition that features artworks by 53 St. Louis regional artists from Missouri & Illinois. Serving as Jurors for this exhibit were St. Louis artists Kit Keith and Tim Liddy, Professor of Art, Fontbonne University. Dawson Morgan. Black Dogwood Vessel. 2012. Stoneware, 13"x8"x7" The artworks presented in this exhibit expose the artist's inspiration & influences, including eras in art history, artists from ancient, modern & contemporary times, and art instructors and mentors. The artist's muses also might be color, religion, media & advertising, the landscape, and nature, as well as numerous other sources. SPECIAL GUEST: THE SKETCHBOOK PROJECT  SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 5-9 p.m. In addition to our Opening Reception on Saturday, August 17, we invite you to please join us that evening from 5-9 p.m. as we welcome our SPECIAL GUEST, The Sketchbook Project to Art Saint Louis. The Sketchbook Project is a global, crowd-sourced art project & traveling exhibition. Since 2006, the Sketchbook Project has encouraged participants from all walks of life to fill the pages of a blank sketchbook. The results are cataloged in the Brooklyn Art Library and shared with the public in venues around the world. This summer, Steven Peterman, co-founder of the Sketchbook Project, and Sara Peterman, director of the Brooklyn Art Library, are hitting the road to share the stories behind the Sketchbook Project with communities across North America. The husband-and-wife duo have set out for adventure in the Mobile Library - their custom-built bookmobile - along with a selection of 4,500 sketchbooks from the permanent collection. Covering more than 10,000 miles and 32 cities in just four months, the Summer Tour is a unique opportunity to experience the Sketchbook Project firsthand and swap stories with the project's organizers. The Summer Tour includes stops in every corner of the country, from Portland, Maine to Los Angeles and a brief stop in St. Louis at Art Saint Louis in between. This year marks the Sketchbook Project's first visit to many wonderful venues, including the Hunter Museum in Chattanooga, the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and the Dahl Art Center in Rapid City, SD.   As part of the adventure, Steven and Sara are documenting the entire Summer Tour for an upcoming book. "We're excited to collect stories from the people and places we encounter throughout the summer," says Steven. "It's an opportunity for us to share a pretty crazy experience - traveling across the country with thousands of sketchbooks and meeting thousands of people along the way." The book will bring together stories from Steven and Sara's escapades on the road with a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing a community art project to life. The goal is to continue inspiring people from diverse backgrounds to make art. "Given all the ways that technology has integrated with our lives, it feels meaningful to meet new people over physical books," says Steven. "This project is about people leaving their mark in the world." The Sketchbook Project's Mobile Library, hosted by Sara & Steven Peterman, will be set up outside of Art Saint Louis from 5-9 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013. The building is bordered by Olive, 14th, Tucker and Pine. Art Saint Louis is located on the Pine Street side (one-way Westbound) of the building.
