Craft Alliance in the Delmar Loop: Friday, 5 April 2013

Trace
Korean artists use glass and metal to explore cultural displacement
April 5, 2013 – June 15, 2013 / Opening Reception: Friday, April 5, 6 – 8pm

Craft Alliance (CA) is pleased to announce the opening reception of Trace, from 6 – 8 pm on Friday, April 5 at CA’s Delmar Loop Gallery. Trace presents seven emerging and mid-career Korean artists who have a long have history in craft and have studied in USA. The curator, Jiyong Lee, has a deep interest in observing artists who work with ideas of personal heritage, culture and present-day influences. This exhibition focuses on the craft materials of glass and metals, and the creation of objects that trace the inner voice of the artists' personal memory, life, their interests, and concepts. Exhibiting artists include Hoyeon Chung, Keunae Song, Hyunsung Cho, Jun Suk Min, Joon Yong Kim, Jin Won Han, and Hyejeong Ko.

The artists in this exhibition have been deeply affected by their experiences of culture shock and the challenge of grappling with language barriers. Hoyeon Chung, Hyunsung Cho, and Jin Won Han use their work to explore their memories, to capture every day events, and to reflect the anxiety of cultural displacement. Keunae Song and Joon Yong Kim create a sense of unfamiliarity by treating the surface of glass in new and unusual ways, complicating the viewers’ perception of the material. The works of Jun Suk Min and Hyejeong Ko encourage viewers to step away from the troubles of the everyday world and into a more playful natural world

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Thursday 10am – 5pm / Friday – Saturday 10am – 6pm / Sunday 11am – 5pm
