SLU Museum of Art: Friday,23 March 2012

March 23 - May 27
Opening reception: Friday, March 23; 5:30 p.m.

Discover the artistic energy of St. Louis' own Brother Mel Meyer, S.M., as the Saint Louis University Museum of Art presents: Providential Journey: The Art of Brother Mel. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 23. The exhibition continues until May 27.

A Marianist brother since 1949, Brother Mel's art captures a decidedly modern whimsy that comes through in a variety of sculptures, paintings and frescos. His creations bring a sense of devotion, joy and wonder. His understanding, vision and humor have enriched our lives, while his character has brought us authentic talent mixed with a palette of hope and a legacy of inspiration. Brother Mel has fulfilled his goal to create art in a host of media ¯ everything from metal and stone, to watercolor and acrylics, to fresco and handmade paper.

Several of his pieces are already familiar to those in the SLU community. Located in the Ellen Clark Sculpture Park at Grand Ave. and Lindell Blvd., these decidedly modern flights of fancy include Blue Moon made of bright blue painted steel, as well as Circle of Green, which features larger-than-life bright green steel figures, reminiscent of blades of grass.
