In partnership with Stray Rescue of St. Louis, the Saint Louis University Museum of Art is pleased to once again host the 2011 installment of Urban Wanderers, a fundraising exhibition in which area artists will paint, illustrate, photograph, and sculpt an abandoned or abused pit bull or pit bull mixed breed that has been given a second chance due to the rescue efforts of the Stray Rescue staff. The exhibition will begin with an opening reception on Friday, July 15 at 6 p.m. The exhibition continues until Sunday, August 28.
Following the highly successful 2010 Urban Wanderers exhibition, the 2011 show will bring to light the common misconceptions regarding the pit bull and other "bully breeds."
Urban Wanderers will showcase the pit bull's loyalty, attentiveness, and athleticism, and attempt to dispel the false perception that the pit bull is born aggressive and dangerous. The pit bull is proof that dogs thrust into dog fighting and other deplorable conditions are victims of human callousness and cruelty, rather than being bred as such.
In addition to the brushes, pencils, and clay used by participating artists, the rescued dogs of Stray Rescue will use their paws, tails, and/or noses to create "personalized" works of art that will also be displayed and available for online silent auction.
The art displayed in the exhibition is available for silent auction by visiting http://www.blacktie-stlouis.com/auctions. Bidding will begin on Friday, July 16. All proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Urban Wanderers is free-of-charge and is open to the public.
