Focus on Photography: Recent Acquisitions
The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum has acquired some exceptional new photographs over the last few years through generous gifts and purchases, which we are pleased to celebrate in the upcoming exhibition Focus on Photography: Recent Acquisitions. The exhibition ranges from historical works by photographers who defined the standards of photographic practice to an international array of contemporary practitioners, including Doug Aitken, Sophie Calle, Louise Lawler, and John Stezaker, who examine and expand the conventional parameters of the medium. Focus on Photography features projects as varied as Edward Curtis’s monumental photogravures of disappearing American Indian tribes in the early twentieth century, Andy Warhol’s Polaroids, which became the basis for silkscreen portraits in the 1970s and 1980s, and David Goldblatt’s critical explorations of the political and economic circumstances of life in South Africa after apartheid. This exhibition offers an exciting opportunity to reflect on the status of photography today and how the medium has expanded to include collage, found objects, installation, video, and digital art. Focus on Photography is curated by Karen Butler, assistant curator.
MFA Thesis Exhibition
The exhibition features thesis projects by the 2010 Master of Fine Arts candidates in Washington University's Graduate School of Art, part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts.
